Pruning and after.......

Somewhere I recall being told to spray newly pruned roses with eco oil or similar to help with Black Spot spores and other nasties. Am I on the right track or am I imagining things?! Advice would be appreciated please!

I usually use lime sulphur. Once at pruning and another 2 weeks later. I spray the plant and surrounding ground to reduce spores and other nasties.

Same as above, however I do the lime sulphur every 2 weeks for 6 weeks and then maintain regualry with wettable sulphur, for the mildew and mites. However adding to this, this year I will alternate with pottasium bicarbonate for mildew and blackspot as well.

Thank you all! I now know what to do! I was so sure I'd read or heard something about spraying at pruning time. I'm not going quite mad after all!

In 2012 when we were at the NRSA Conference in Melbourne the AQ bought a book titled Roses Practical Pruning and Planting by Ross Heathcote. A book of basic principals of pruning and planting that all novice rosarians should read. The book was put out by The Rose Society of Victoria in 1991 and reprinted in 1995, 1998 and 2001.

went to a pruning demonstration with Bob Melville at his nursery. It was an eye opener....... He said he wanted this bush at this height...... cut everything at that height...no particular way...... removed any dead wood and small insignificant skinny canes and that was it.....he wasn't even worried about cutting on a slant or where the eyes were.......done very quickly......

I have heard over the years a bad prune is like a bad haircut i.e.give it time and you don't know the difference. Don't misunderstand what I've said I am not advocating having haircuts using a chainsaw.

If you pruned every rose so that the cut was on the correct angle and above eyes only facing outwards you would either have not a lot of roses or you had too much time on your hands.

I must admit when I prune for paying customers I prune for what is required in the customers garden and where the rose is positioned. This also goes for the type of rose. One rose in question is Cecile Brunner over an arbour to a garage, this gets cut any where, not to any angle, only to keep the entrance clear. My own roses get pruned to the variety, if they get pruned at all.

I saw a guy on a gardening programme the other evening and he just chopped away, with no angle cuts or anything pertaining to the pruning rules I've been taught! He said the angle cut, whether it was straight across or whatever, didn't matter!

Many years ago a rosarian I consider to be the most knowledgeable I have ever met told me exactly what you have said David.
In line with your comment David he told me if you prune all your roses to the same height unless they are of the same variety at the same stage of development you don't know a great deal about pruning.

Awe Neptune, lucky man getting tips from Bob, I was at Melville's 2 weeks ago, the only excitement I got, was having a huge slice of apple pie and a truck load of cream.
