A friend has recently been given two roses: one is Tamora (Yay!) and one is Copper Gem (Boo-hiss). The gift giver knows nothing about roses, so friend thinks she might replace copper gem with a similar and better rose. Doesn't ahve to be identical, just sufficiently colour=-related so that gift-giver will not notice the replacement when she visits in the distant future.

BTW , friend doesn't want to care for a ton of roses, and keeps her stock to around the 8-9-plant mark, hence the replacement.

Suggestions most appreciated. I personally ahve never had a rose in this colour, so I know nothing first-hand.

Betsy what is wrong with Copper Gem? I looked it up quickly and it looks to be orange in some pics and a creamier apricot in others. Is your friend looking for perfume? How about Warm Wishes (I love this one) or maybe Ashram which is more towards subtle orange? But lacks the fragrance.

Silky, from some quick research into Copper Gem, the story doesn't look good. No fragrance, susceptible to diseases, and a pi$$y score on HMF, and almost no mention of this variety on any gardenweb site. No accumulation of fandom over time, unlike say Fragrant Cloud and many others, so I suspect that this is one of those '80s roses that was quickly overtaken by better ones in its colour class, and so has been more or less left in the dust.

Woudln't matter if friend kept a big collection, or if gift-giver was never to be seen again, but friend really does keep the numbers to single digits (and tosses new seasonal acquisitons that fail to instantly enchant with a speed that makes maree look like a hoarder ;-)))))

PS: sending friend your suggestions right now.

How about this one,

As for Adolf, it is at it's best under glass, or in a more shaded area rather than direct sun.

Oh the ever-divine Just Glorious Just Joey. Friend has this one - was the first variety she ever bought, years ago. (Oh just have a guess as to who enabled her into the rose-pit ).

This was my fourth rose ever, acquired in 1998. Frustrating in Oz, because I can't get her to do a lot here, and I have given up on her. Maybe stock has been cloned to death.

Again, I say to the breeders: stop giving me all your rinse-repeat :meh: new junk, and re-engineer to a new level of excellence some of the old Greats, like JJ

I do like my Ashram. Smile (But if the others turned up I probably wouldn't complain either - except to wonder where to fit them in. Wink )

An Australian bred rose that fits into this colour range is the Laurie Newman bred China Sunrise. A National Trial Ground silver medal winner China Sunrise is a rose that can be purchased from Reliable Roses.
