Some Werribee Roses

Here are some of the roses that caught my eye on Sunday. It was hot and some of the blooms were a bit droopy, not to mention the people.

Avon - a healthy rose, lots of flowers.

Hot Cocoa - an intriguing colour, I couldn't detect any perfume though.

Shocking Blue - a floribunda that handled the heat well.

Thank You Rose - another healthy flori, appeared low-growing.

Sweet Intoxication - delicious perfume. “The Ultimate Garden Vixen” ? No but a nice rose all the same.

Nice job, silky! We should send you out into the field more often - great Roving Rose Reporter.

Shocking Blue looks very like my Love Potion. Nice.

So Sweet Intoxication smelled good to you? Must be happier in southern climes, because mmine was pure detergent. I need to live in Melbourne again, I think.

Sorry you didn't like what you saw of Parole, but perhaps providential that Orange Alien Cuckoo displaced it in your garden, thus being a place-saver for a rose you like much better ;-))

Well done Silky I have Warm Wishes and it's a fantastic rose for health,perfume and lovely colour.

Your photo of Warm Wishes is very good. As you would be aware I am interested in the Australian bred roses did you get any photos of the same at Werribee.

Ausrose by the time I'd finished with the HT's and looked quickly at DA roses, I'd just run out of energy to walk any further in the heat or take more photos. Next time I'm there I will take some of the Aussies.
Danny, good to know that Warm Wishes is a good rose. It has impressed me every time I've seen it. It should do well in the spot I have ready.
Betsy, funny you mention that detergent smell. I had a whiff of some DA rose, can't remember what, and it smelled like soap! Horrible!

Daybreaker - a very healthy rose, always in flower.

Duet - a tough rose, healthy (well mine is) despite a few spots

Peacekeeper - put on a good show, heaps of flowers, little to no perfume I could discern

Silver Jubilee - this looked gorgeous, so many flowers, medium height, little/no fragrance unfortunately. But beautiful.

Dame Elisabeth Murdoch - the picture of health and quite beautiful. Wasn't in the least phased by the heat. No fragrance. Drat!

Maria Callas - a show stopping colour, lots of flowers, strong grower from the look of things, healthy, perfumed.

Your photo's are so good Silky , i have been there lots now but always enjoy going back and they have that big lawn and bbq area too , better on a bit cooler day though i think ...

Thanks Maree. I just hope for the best when I take photos. I don't have a fancy camera but I'm happy with these. I've only been there twice and missed out on some areas each time, as there is so much to take in. Especially with the crowds and heat.

Yes , for sure its a big place , a lot of roses for the volunteers to look after in their spare time , i just like going there and looking around and usually theres not all those people there ....

If I lived closer to Werribee I wouldn't mind being a volunteer. It's certainly a lot of work for them as there are just so many roses. Still it's a good opportunity to see roses in the flesh, nothing like the real thing to give us a true indication of a particular rose. It was interesting to see which ones were really healthy too. Some were literally covered in BS.
I was talking to the man from Silkies as he showed me how he deals with water shoots at the side that might get damaged by the wind. He pruned a perfectly healthy shoot with several buds right back to about 2 inches! I admired his nifty looking pruners: Lowe. Best he's used he said, they are also used in vineyards and olive growing apparently. I'll look out for them. I wonder if anyone here on the forum uses them?

I think the roses there do it tough Silky, some looked as though they hadn't been pruned for quite some time and there didn't seem to be much mulch on them , but then it is all run on donations , too far for me to be a volunteer as well , haven't used those Lowe pruners , wonder how much they are ...

Valencia - great perfume, huge golden flowers

Parole - great colour, big and blowsy

Pink Silk - looked good, couldn't detect much perfume

Red Cedar - bright strong red, couldn't detect much perfume

I have a bush of Valencia and I have found it to be the most heat resistant rose in my garden. As it doesn't have a well formed centre it isn't an exhibition class hybrid tea however it could be shown successfully in the three full bloom class.

I plan on getting and enjoying Valencia in my garden soon. Knowing it stands up to the heat only confirms its virtues. Don't know why it has taken me so long to fall in love with it.

I saw Camp David too Silky , and wondered they were so small , maybe they had just been pruned or the rabbits had got at them , Olde Fragrance one of my favourite roses , i love it ...

Can't thank you ladies enough for such a wide array of pix and great, pithy info. Despite the heat - would've killed me, for sure - you did a superb job of bringing the day to all of us.

Have to be honest Betsy lol and say no i didn't buy it at Werribee , i bought it at Silkie's about a month ago , so do i still have to hand in my badge ? My photos were pretty basic i think , my son was in a hurry , as usual ,posting them , and i had my husband with me at Werribee , and he was in a hurry , as usual lol . MEN !!!!!

Maree how big does your Olde Fragrance grow? I wouldn't mind having it but I don't think I have enough room for it.

Mmmnn, i reckon it grows to about 120-130 high , mine is a new one this year , the old one had been there for ages and i redid the bed this year, wouldn't be without it , probably needs to go at the back of a border ..

Well that's not too tall. I'll tuck that away in my rose memory bank for the future. It's a beautiful looking rose that's for sure.

And it has a lovely perfume Silky ..

Olde Fragrance easily goes over 1.5m. Mine is about 1.7.

Yeah, gorgeous rose, but at that height, I don't think it would be happy with me, even in a very large pot. Pity

Autumn , you must be a better rose grower than me , cause mine never got that big ,must be the wooly mulch lol ..
