That is a gorgeous rose Alee. I love the colour of red that it is and its golden stamens make for a very royal combo!
Tell me a little about the climate of the Maldives. Is it tropical or sub-tropical or temperate?

Billndee, We have a tropical climate. The average temperature is between 32 - 26 C. The average humidity is around 80%. We have coral sand soil.

Val, it's a Sony DSC-H50. I think the trick is to take the picture without the flash and to keep the rose in shade while you shoot it.

Alee, Don Juan is one of my favourites and suits a small formal garden.
The fragrance is wonderful. I have a 2 year old growing on a fence and is just starting to put on good growth. There is also one growing on a metal arch in a small garden not far from me and it's just magic in Spring and Autumn.

It has been listed as a very good breeder so I will pay attention to it's hips.

Ozeboy, I have read elsewhere that it has a wonderful fragrance. But mine has a slight fragrance. Do you think it is due to our climate or just being the first bloom?

Does it set hips?

the shape of DJ's bloom has reminded me on my 'honky tonk woman'. Later I registered that DJ is the grandfather of it and other ones of my seedlings. Please compare to the 2nd picture:

1 st bloom of HTW in the spring 2008

late bloom in the autum

HTW is just so (or more) fragrant as her grandfater. Sorry that you can not smell this Sad

Alee, you should do as Simon recommended, start breeding with the Ladykiller, I believe DJ has good genes. Rose breeding is also possible with potted roses.

I almost forgot, because my Sympathy Seedlings have never seen their grandfather I will show them the pictures Very Happy

I hope to try breeding as well in future. But now I need to focus on propagating the ones I have. I am trying to grow local rose as rootstock and to experiment with budding.

Thanks for everyone's encouragement.

Alee, the rose I mentioned else where ( Firefighter ) has Don Juan in it's pedigree. Go to Help me Find and check all the roses bred down from DJ.

I have just looked at DJ and can't see any hips but the fragrance is wonderful.

Bemo, I like the look of your 'honky tonk woman'. See if you can get Alee breeding roses as he will have difficulty growing them in such small pots.
I did mention to him that he should grow in styrene fruit boxes with potting mix and a drip tube with hydroponic solution feeding them to get greater growth in a small root container. The largest cut flower grower in Australia grows in this manner inside igloos made with plastic roof , shadecloth sides and ends open. WARNING, when roses are grown in this manner they always need water as the root system is not large enough to support the top growth. They would need to be cut back or watered regularly each day if the hydroponic solution was withheld.

Bruce and Alee... when you start wanting to breed the roses I've found that you get a better hip set if you also cut back the feeding a bit, don't prune so hard, and let them go a little pot-bound. There is also a thread about this on the RHA at the moment. If they think their throats have been cut a bit more of their survival instincts kick in and the chance of setting hips increases.

Hi Tasv, I don't prune except to keep dieback under control and use mostly poultry manure. Seem to get good hips but its hard to measure as each season is different and get variation due to growth of the plant.

The 60 odd seedlings are sorting themselves out, will possibly end up with 20 hopefuls then there will be other culls as they mature. If I get 4 then I will be extremely happy.
