Question
Ok, just a question/quiz on the subject of perfume/fragrance in roses. Which variety/varieties care it, does anyone know, put your thinking caps on people, see how many you can come up with.

Re: Question
Most have perfume one way or another and depends on what you like.
But my favourites would be
Comtess de Larbathe
Mme Ernst Calvat (ours is on a pillar so it has its adavantage of not having to bend over)
Felicia (actually most Hybrd Musks have delightful purfume)
and for an outside runner Pink Chiffon.

Re: Question
Probably should add that the heritage roses have a more subtle perfume but can knock you over without being overly strong.
One of our neighbour's house is probably 80-100 metres away and the lady there tells us that in spring when the plants in the circle of Comtess de Larbathe are flowering she can smell the perfume. There are about 20-30 roses in the circle so there are literally thousands of flowers. Its funny though I don't notice it but I notice the perfume of our susanqua camellias when others do not notice.

Re: Question
A good mix Betsy, old and new. It isn't fare that you include one's we can't have yet or even get at all. These I reckon go on the wish list related to roses from overseas we will have to wait for(hopefully)

Re: Question
I'd love to say that I have influence on top of influence, and my smallest wish is someone else's command. In reality, we lived in Seattle for five years, where I was stupefied with boredom, and so discovered the angsty joys of roses.
Secret and Ginger Hill will never make it to Oz, I reckon. They're old news now, and would have been here by now if anyone was going to pick them up in Oz.
I don't understand why Secret didn;t cross the pond: hugely successful rose in N. America and Europe. It's the rose that's both infuriating and inescapably captivating. Some days it's brilliant, somedays it's awful, but like the little girl with the curl, when it's good it;s UNBEATABLE. No wonder few people ever give this one up. Bewitchingly beautiful and variable, and the scent is divinnnnne.
Also one of the most photogenic colour blend roses of all time - owners just can't stop snapping Secret. I myself have a few thousand digital pix on a memory card in some dark drawer.
Having said all that - pssst: I lovedlovedloved my frilled near-white Ginger Hill evenmore than Secret. No one knows for sure, because GH's origins are shrouded in mystery, but I think the two roses are related.

Re: Question
Betsy, I’ve wanted to ask this for ages, but was too concerned I might get off topic. Then I realized this is the “Question” thread. DOH?
Your imported roses sound wonderful, was it very difficult to get them into the country? Were there any restrictions, quarantine or other requirements, and what were the costs involved?
I don’t think I will be able to get my Penzance roses here in Australia …

Re: Question
Jac, I think you will find that the roses which Betsy is referring to is on a wish list. I will try and get Finbarr from Swanes to give us a timeline on how long it takes.

Re: Question
I'm still curious as to why Secret never made it into circulation here. Maybe didn't pass the field trials - although it seems to be a credible plant everywhere else in the First World. Such an unforgettable creature.
Having said that, I wouldn't even be remotely tempted to pay big bucks to import it now. So many other roses, so little time.
Secret Garden Musk Climber, on the other hand......... ;-))))))))) That one I would rob a bank for. (Okay, maybe a piggybank..)
