Tomorrow I turn to the dirty business of planting my Treloars order (Jeez, only 12 lousy roses, and I'm already in operatic Camille mode. No emoticon for hammy theatrical swoon, is there?)

Before I have to get serious, I thought I'd toss out a shallow and labour-unintensive question:

What rose or roses have you all selected for your lovely avatars? I think I've worked out Neptune's Cool Mine, as I never cease to tell you, are Valencia and Jardins de Bagatelle. Badly executed vase plonk, but lemme tell ya, great fragrance. Also the pic fit the format.

And you?

Don’t know what mine shall be, haven’t seen them all yet. These things must be very carefully selected, but it’s highly likely it’ll be a Monsieur Tiller.
I have to say, I’m very happy with my Valencia and visitors comment on it more than on any other rose: It’s gigantic!
Be sure to give plenty of B&B to your Iceberg when planting tomorrow.

Just beautiful, Maree, I though I had enough Austins, but probably have to consider that a little more carefully.

Jac2 , have a confession , thats not one of my photo's , i haven't got one of JC , but its fairly close , she's a nodding , fragrant, pink- gold flower , gets a bit of BS , but not too bad , you have to hold her head up to get a good look , but thats okay for me .

Yes, that’s OK for me, too. I like it when they swing in the breeze a bit; it’s a gentle, relaxed look. Thanks for that appraisal; I’ve been a bit keen on her for a while. It’s a nice photo anyway.
Do you know if we can take the avatar photos down again and exchange, if we change our mind or is it permanent?

Thank you Jordan. It's such a beautiful thing but reading about its thorns and huge upright canes on HMF, it won't make it into my garden mores the pity.

LOL don't torture me! But I will keep a lookout for it when I visit the rose garden at Werribee in a couple of weeks. Your flower looks more purplish compared to photos on HMF.

Beautiful rose! Where do you stop! Never have enough room.

Here in Brisbane I have been regularly told that you will have no end of trouble David Austins but so far touch wood they are going great guns. Damn happy I chose to go against the advice so far.

Cheers

Watch out Brett. Blackspot will hit when you are not watching.

Seriously we have never been able to grow them successfully in the garden. They either get BS and loose all their leaves or grow into long stalky very unattractive shrubs. We have only two left. A Teasing Georgia and a Graham Thomas which have survived because they are both yellow and at present we are prepared to look the other way when the BS hits. They may not last much longer though we will just see how they go.

A couple weekends ago we went to a garden up our way and the people there grow them fine though I do suspect that they spend a bit of time spraying, fertilising and pruning them. Something that I don't particularly like doing (especially the spraying bit).

I know there are others that successfully grow them in the humidity but do need to spray them. I guess if you have the time and are willing to spray the plants then they should grow fine.
