I didn't know that Betty had another name until I was looking her up on HMF last night Margaret .
It all comes down to marketing and chasing the almighty$$ doesn't it.
You'd think that with all the new roses that are released each year , that something fresh could have been chose to wear the Centenary name tag.
And aussie bred of course .
I know I felt really disappointed a few weeks back when a friend sent me a link to the new Firestar rose , to see that it was bred o/s .

Dunno what happened there.
Might have to start a new thread about rose names that bug. Smile

I don't have Picasso Damo so can't comment on the B/S side of it.

What I do find interesting is the apple fragrance being noted on a few of the roses mentioned in this thread .
Where abouts would this have come from , does anybody know ? The rose that I have , that is really green apple scented , is Shady Lady ; but when I looked that up on HMF , it's parentage is listed as unknown .

Do you mean that 'Shady Lady' has apple scented blooms or foliage Rosalie?

Might be worth crossing it with r. rubiginosa!!! Hmmmm

Well certainly the flowers have the apple fragrance , haven't ever crushed the leaves to have a sniff . Will have a look at my 2 when I go out side and see if they have enough new growth to spare a leaf or two.

It has bright green foliage and stems that you could almost describe as apple green and virtually thornless as well.
The bushes that I had in Donnybrook easily reached 4'+ each year and had great heads of flowers that would weigh the branches over . It does as it's name suggests , have a bit more shade tolerance than other roses and it looks like the sort of rose that would do okay on it's own roots .
Would look lovely as a standard too methinks.

I managed to salvage a few little hips as my sister was pruning this year so I will give them a go to see what happens .
I'm just off now to sniff the leaves .
Laughing

I can't wait to go home now (still at a friend's place) & take a better look at 'Shady Lady'. I have had her for a few years but constant trimmings by wildlife had reduced her to a single whispy stem & I don't remember much about what she is like (thanks for the reminder Rosalie). Potted up, she is going great guns; I noticed the other day!

OMG I am having trouble concentrating. I caved & went back & bought my new pup's brother & I have them both wrestling at my feet! OMG!!! affraid LOL

What sort of dogs Damo ? Not rose eating ones I hope . Had one of those and the jokes about cast iron mouths wears thin after a while.

A couple of pix for you.

Rosalie,

My 2 new pups (Clementine & Murray) are Jack Russell x Maltese & I just know - it's already very clear - that they are going to be chewers/destroyers! LOL My main concern is getting them used to the guinea pigs & my pet pekin hens! At least my geese will set them straight right from the start! Evil or Very Mad Oh & my 2 cats will too! Laughing

I also have 2 Maltese x Shih tzu (Georgia & Lucy - both aged 7) & a nearly 14 year old labrador x named Lourdes. In addition to these 5, I share a dog with my friend (8 month old Patchouli who is also a jack russell x).

Do you have pets rosalie? It seems - to me at least - that roses & pets kind of go together!!! Must be the outdoors aspect!

OK now to your great pics. Love the first one involving 'BB'...talk about swamped! LOL Nice foliage on both plants IMO.

'SL' has such lush looking new foliage! 'Our Vanilla' has it too. This year I have been paying close attention to foliage shape, size & colour & most of my roses have darker/ redder new growth so it's nice to see some light green for a change!

I grow Scentimental and it is a fantastic rose. Very healthy, spreads wide, luxurious foliage. One of few decent striped roses, better than any of the Delbards, imho.
It seems it is very fertile too.

I'm hunting for a cherry pink/red and white striped rose, but I've heard Scentimental can be a bit disappointing - any thoughts or recommendations? Smile
