Am wondering what it's like healthwise? One of its parents is 'Playboy'; a rose I have been researching a bit as a breeder lately that seems VERY worthwhile.. it seems to pass on excellent traits to its descendants.

I grow 'Scentimental' but lost interest in it early on...gets a fair bit of blackspot in my garden & doesn't seem to thrive but the blooms are often nice. I have just pulled it out & potted it up so I will soon see if it likes being grown that way instead!!!

I have both of its parents ('Playboy' & 'Peppermint Twist') & they are much healthier (and simply better) than their "child" IMO!

'Playboy' seems to be really worthwhile... how long have you had yours? How's it been for you?

'Playboy' is awesome. I had one in Sydney & it was pretty good there when most other roses were failing badly. I had one here & it did brilliantly too until it got broken below the graft. My 2 new ones have been here 4 months & are growing strongly. I think it has loads to offer breeding-wise!!!

Did you ever try to strike cuttings from the beheaded one?

No...it was beheaded long before I found it unfortunately...very dead!!!

I often wonder where 'Playboy' gets its great health from. I have grown all 3 roses that feature in its parentage (I still have 'City of Leeds') but none seemed particularly great healthwise (not awful either I must say); must come from somewhere a bit further back. I will use 'Scentimental' as a pollen parent again this year to see if 'Playboy's' great aspects can be teased back out!

Hmmmm... You've seen 'My Stars' haven't you (think I asked you this the other day)? One parent is 'Playboy' and the plant is just superb. I'm going to put 'Playboy' onto a range of things this year to see what it turns up. First up is 'Monsieur Tillier' x 'Playboy'... thining of also going with 'Immensee' if it flowers for me this year. Lot's of things to think about this year.. I feel like I'm starting off this season far more prepared and intelligently than I have before... kinda exciting...

Thumbsup re: 'My Stars'...very nice!!!

I feel the same as you Simon! Year 1 (2008) was all about the OP seedlings & growing them out, Year 2 (2009) was about learning how to actually make crosses & doing whatever crosses I could but now...year 3...I am on my way! I am well & truly addicted to hybridizing now!!!

Oh & with regard to your 'Immensee' x 'Playboy' (or the reverse) cross, I am going to attempt 'Immensee' x 'Ralph's Creeper' ('Papoose' x 'Playboy')this year. I am guessing I have the same vision as you! LOL

'RC' is still recovering from that Cursing wallaby but budwood should be possible later this year!

I wish I knew if it set hips/seed or if it has produced decent seedlings from its pollen!!!

LOL I have tried to "get it" a few times but it just doesn't sink in. I think - if fully understood - it would be interesting & handy to know! I'm sure oneday, someone, will explain it in a way that even a dumby like me will understand! Or maybe not!!! Laughing

OK, time to crawl into bed with (my darling) Clementine...nothing too exciting; just my new puppy (dog #4)!

Thanks for the trade of ideas/info tonight Simon...goodnight! Smile

Oh & happy birthday to Karen! Roses

Thinking about this more... though... 'Red Max Graf' is a kordesii which means it is most likely tetraploid and 'The Fairy' is diploid which means the un-named seedling that is the seed parent of 'Red Drift' is most likey triploid. That means it can make different kinds of pollen (1n and 2n). Then the pollen parent was a seedling from an un-named seedling x 'Ralph's Creeper'. If the seedling mated with RC was a diploid then the resulting seedlilng could also have been triploid... so I bet the cross to make Red Drift was triploid x triploid that resulted in both making 1n pollen and a diploid seedling (aka Red Drift). LOL Did ya follow all that ?

As a plant, 'Playboy' doesn't do much for me either; the flower colour isn't really my thing... but as a parent it seems to be excellent. Have a look at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] According to Paul, this rose was only 4 years old at the time the photo was taken, was 6ft x 7ft, has never been pruned or sprayed and flowers continuosly. That's my kind of rose!!! It is from 'Playboy' x 'Basye's Legacy' (another awesome line of roses stemming from Dr Basye's lines of roses such as 'Commander Gillet').

Has anyone used another Playboy offspring , Betty Boop ? [ jeez don't I hate that name too , I think it's silly , what was wrong with Centenary of Federation?]
One thing this site has got me doing , is looking at the background of the roses that are doing well here as residents of the nobsill bootcamp .

Last night it was B.B's turn .
My plant is about 3 yrs old and nearly completely covered by the neighbouring malva maritima ; to the point where I am going to have to shift the rose . Despite this less than ideal site , it manages to flower away for months , just pokes it's flower buds up through the malva . Gets a bit of BS but what wouldn't, living as it does and not getting sprayed.

Playboy X Picasso

cheers. Rosalie

Nope!

'Picasso' in a roses breeding scares me but 'BB' was very eyecatching outside Swanes last Autumn so I bought her! Good to know your 'BB' grows pretty well Rosalie...

T'other way around Rosalie; it was released first as Betty Boop, and some .../person thought they'd make more money out of it here by renaming it "Centenary of Federation". There has been extensive discussion on whether an Oz-bred rose would have been more appropriate for the name, and whether it's seemly to rename a rose which has a frivolous name, after a significant event or person.
And a widespread consensus that giving roses multiple names for marketing purposes is putrid.
