People here in Australia are guilty of this as well. The vast majority of roses available here are also from the Middle East and Africa. I actually know some rose producers from St Africa, who now live in Australia where they produce roses again, and the one thing they said was that here production costs are so much higher... we can never hope to compete with the cheap imports from other countries. The only way to combat this is to refuse their entry. We can't do it based on quarantine... the flowers coming in are often more sterile than then people travelling with them. It needs to be a governmental thing saying straight out NO to them. It needs to be done. Then it needs to be accompanied by a reduction in overall production costs and this will only happen if fuel prices fall or alternative energies are found etc. It's a vicious cycle. We can't deny people in developing countries the chance to achieve the same standard of living that we enjoy but at the same time we need to ensure human rights are not violated in the process... it's like the blood diamonds of Africa Sad
