Tea rose cuttings

Hi, I've tried in the past to propagate tea roses from cuttings that balinbear (thank you) sent me and the tea roses I have from cuttings from ones I've bought. The ones I carefully prepared, dusted with hormone and stuck in pots in the shadehouse, or glasshouse and none took. They looked OK for a while then dried up and died. After advice from balinbear, this time I just stuck them in the ground in the vegie garden and guess what? Yep - they're growing. I'm tickled pink with them. I did all the teas I have and some Carabella, Cousin Essie (the parent plants grew too large) and General Gallieni and Zephirine Drouhin (she's a bit untidy to grow). I'll put Zephirine Drouhin in a different area this time and just bundle her up in one column. I didn't pre-callous them or slice pieces of the bottom of them - just stuck them in the ground. Pretty happy with them.

Don't dig them up too soon.

We did quite a few this year and it is looking good. A couple of the usually hard suspects are not behaving but most look to be growing.

I pruned the roses early this year - it was late June when I started - it just felt right. What sort of time frame do you suggest for looking at the cuttings. I don't want to stuff it now - they're looking good. I don't want to make a business of it - they're for my own garden. I'm going to put the more thornless ones in the general border.

I have found that it is better to leave them until November or even January or so. You can see the plants are growing by then (some very much so depending on the plant). Even though it is hotter the roots are better developed and can handle the move. If you move them too early the roots may not be developed enough and you will kill them. I also put them in pots for a while to make sure they were okay after coming out of the ground.

I have also used a hose to loosen up the dirt around the plants. I squirt the water down into the ground to wash away the dirt from around the roots though if they are developed enough a trim with the shovel does not appear to hurt them.
