Hello from Wheatbelt country WA

Hello to you all, thank you for letting me join the group.
 
I have been growing roses in small and large ways for the past thirty years (how time flies ).  I've had addictions to heritage roses and DA's in the past and have been fortunate enough to be able to have the room for large growers (I miss my hedge of 12 Lorraine Lees).  

Now I have semi retired to what is for me a small garden, we are renovating a 1950 built cottage and a garden filled with old HT's and Floribundas, Frank (the previous owner) was well known in the town for his garden but when he passed away at 91 the garden had been neglected for some years.  It is exciting to see the old roses responding to my TLC, I even won a first prize in the local rose show last year with one of old Frank's roses!

I will be keeping the same style of roses with any new introductions, I have now fallen in love with the classic rose style with that gorgeous rosy fragrance.

I'm looking forward to getting to know you all.

Welcome aboard Ninox. By the sounds of it, you know your stuff and will find kindred spirits here, from growers of OGR to HT's and everything in between. I'm sure you have lots of knowledge that will be welcomed by people like me who has only in the last few years succumbed to rose mania.
Where abouts is York in WA? Pardon my geographical failing.

Hi Ninox, and welcome! I like the oldies too, although I'm new to rose growing.

I'm in Melbourne, but my family is originally from Toodyay (Silky - York is a very pretty old town on the Avon River, an hour and a bit east of Perth. Have you heard of the Avon Descent? It starts in Northam, which is the town between Toodyay and York). Anyway, they're  all in Perth now, except me.

Paul and Neptune are Westies too, you'll meet them shortly!

Hello Ninox and welcome to the forum.

As a rule, I would be typing this from Perth, but at the moment I am in China on holidays, so you get a long distant welcome........don't be afraid to ask questions...someone will always answer them.....

It appears we have a Rose-alcoholic named Ninox, I don't think he(I assume)(which I shouldn't) needs any forcing into the world of roses by the first post, So a warm welcome from me(David) to the forum. I guess you have read the rules thing about posting photo's, so when your weeks detention is up might you post some from your previous residence and of the new one with as you say Franks roses. In the mean time any chance of posting some of thier names please.

Ooh yes, we'd all love to know what you're growing!

It was great to read you showed some of old Frank's roses and won a prize. Showing roses can be an exhilarating experience if you keep it in its perspective. Neptune is one of the leading exhibitors of roses in WA so if you you need any advice on the subject get in contact with Neptune (John) or is it Marco Polo.

Yes we love living in York, we've been here 3 years now.  Tossed up between Toodyay & York as a place to retire, York won but only by a narrow margin!

I'm a "she" David   Yes I will post the names of the roses later.  BTW I was born in Mudgee!

I guess "she" has another name rather than "Ninox"

Haha, yes David, we will only ever be "blow-ins" in York  My ancestors first came to the Mudgee district in the early 1860's, I still have close & distant relatives there, I had to marry a "blow-in" just to be sure I wasn't marrying a cousin         My "other" name is Maryanne

Hi Maryanne, what a lovely name I work for one of the 'original' settlers here by the name of Cox.

Maryanne, do you know any of the Wroth family in the Toodyay/wheat belt area? They're my mum's side of the family.

No I don't think I do, are they gardeners? I have met some very nice people (who's names escape me lol) who belong to the Toodyay Garden Club, a very active and friendly group. I drove through Toodyay today, a pretty town

Well my grandad was a gardener, so they could be! But I don't know, I'm not in touch with any of them.
