We got totally smashed in Melbourne today. Was a busy day at work! And then a long drive home through the flooded roads.... Still I was glad I finished my planting yesterday Smile

Been really busy the last couple of days. Managed to get them unpacked last night and into a tub to soak. Will get planted up today.
Lots of lightning for ages last night. More monsoonal rain too - haven't seen the radar that dark red for a long time.

AD I am elated that you are very happy to have received an Aussie as your free rose from Treloars. As you would be more than likely aware I have a passion for Australian bred roses and hopefully I have awakened such a passion in other rosarians. On the NRSA website there is a list of registered Australian bred roses compiled by Australian register Laurie Newman. I couldn't find the rose City of Ballarat on the list however there is a rose City of Benalla. Have you any information on City of Ballarat?

'City of Ballarat' is sold by Treloars and was bred by Ron & Barbara Inverarity from Victoria (they bred the Jane McGrath rose).

And speaking of Aussie roses, Doug, I'm very hopeful I may have at least one Aussie rose to show in our local ag show's Australian-bred rose class (Benalla) in 3 weeks time. My 'City of Benalla' (Dawson) is putting up buds much faster this year. I'll give it another whack with fertiliser today. :p
(That's what you do to hurry them up, yes? Fertiliser and water? Mind you the sub soil is preeeettty damp. )

AD according to the to the reference you sent me City of Ballarat is a sport of Charles Austin so technically it isn't an Australian bred rose.

The definition of an Australian bred rose is one that pollen is taken from the flower/s of a particular cultivar and used to fertilise the flower/s of another cultivar. The resulting seeds of the fertilised rose are grown and the bushes that spring from the seeds become a Australian bred roses.

A sport is a mutation of a rose. The best way to describe this is for whatever reason a stem on a bush produces a flower/attribute that is a different (e.g.colour - a red rose the like of Kardinal suddenly produces an orange flower on the end of a stem). A bush that is developed from a bud taken from the particular stem and grafted onto rootstock is considered a new cultivar. Roses that are produced from cuttings or buds from this new bush produce (i.e. the orange version of the original rose) are a new cultivar. This is not considered to be an Australian bred rose but rather a rose sported in Australia.

The example I have given actually happened. In 1997 a nurseryman named Graeme Catt discovered a bush of the red Kardinal in his nursery with a stem supporting an orange flower. Buds from this stem were subsequently budded onto rootstock and the rose Happy Anniversary (originally named Orange Kardinal) was born. It was released in 2000.

It should be noted the rose Jane McGrath isn't an Australian bred rose but rather a sport of Bonica.

AD congratulations on your intention to enter the Australian bred section of the Benalla Show with the appropriately named City of Benalla (Dawson). I have a special affection for George Dawson as it was his rose Imp that has given the AQ and I many champion ribbons and on one occasion gave us a grand champion ribbon at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Oh rats. I'd missed that distinction. (Note that they don't say which DA rose it sported from..)

And yes, I'm reallllyyyy hoping I get blooms even *half* suitable for showing!! LOL
The 'Amazing Grace' and 'Flemington' are still too small to produce show blooms I think.

AD you have two potential winners in Amazing Grace(Chapman) and Flemington Racecourse(Chapman). Flemington(Chapman) and Flemington Racecourse(Chapman) are the same rose. If you haven't the miniflora Joyce Abounding(Chapman) I suggest you put it on your wish list as it is a magnificent rose for both garden and showing. It won the "2014 Ausrose of the Year" award.
