Thanks for your inquiry roseman, well for me, I live about 800 metres from the ocean, the fires are in around Parkerville which is in the foothills, around 65kms from me. So I haven't even seen any smoke/haze, anyways I have seen the reports and one has a great deal of sadness for those who have lost homes etc. Unfortunately this is one of the draw backs of living where they do, it is a lovely area in the foothills.

I'm like paul...on the beach.......but I do have a friend up there and the fire passed within 800mtrs of his place......he is ok at present

Bush fires are a terrible thing and I've always felt living in the Australian bush is playing Russian roulette however quite a few people are prepared to take the risk. Like the recent devastating bush fires in WA we had those terrible bush fires on the Blue Mountains during last October which 200 homes were lost which isn't all that distance from where I live however we live out of the bush on a river flat below the mountains. It is good to know our WA rosarians are safe and let's hope those who are victims get their lives back on track quickly without too much heartache.

My thoughts are with those poor people in WA who have lost their houses and in one case their life. Poor man trying to save his home. Bushfires are a terrifying thing and I think it's going to be a shocker this summer. There are some advantages of living in suburbia. I'm not looking forward to the week ahead here in Victoria, 43 expected today in Melbourne. No chance of protecting the garden besides deep watering prior to this heatwave.

When it gets to 40 plus temperatures I water my pots 3 times a day and they seem to cope.

Yes living out of town has its risks but you need to make sure you can handle them or be prepared for the losses.
We have bush on our place but it is more rainforest with a creek running though it and with houses on the other side. We have had some "bad" fires up in hills and a few houses have been lost but generally these were built virtually in the bush with no clearing of trees or undergrowth.

We live in the hills too, it is a risk but for us it's worth it. Just make sure insurance is paid up to date!

Wow, that sounded wrong. I mean it's still devastating to lose everything, and we all hope it won't happen to us. But I think most of us would still choose to live where we do despite the risks.
