What Did You Get For Christmas? Empty What Did You Get For Christmas?

Post by Ausrose 25th December 2013, 18:48

I like to get gifts that I need. This year the African Queen bought me two automatic timers for my irrigation system and tap pressure gauge. Members of the family gave me Bunnings' vouchers. These I save until I need something at Bunnings during the year. This year a perfectly good mower rusted out so with the accumulated Bunnings' vouchers I bought a new lawnmower. On the subject of the mower it rusted across where the catcher is attached to the mower apart from that the mower is in good condition. I am not sure how old the mower is however I believe somewhere in the vicinity of 8 yrs. A point I would make is I still have my father's first motor mower a Victa which was purchased in 1955 from the money he won on the 1955 Melbourne Cup winner Toporoa and this mower has only a small amount of surface rust and still starts. They sure don't make things like they used too.

Merry Christmas to all! I had to work today, but we put on a lovely Xmas lunch at work and a good time was had by all. I was lucky enough to get a membership to the Diggers Club and a nice new set of secateurs (spelling!), a cute little teapot (my other obsession) and some amazing Holy Basil tea! Lucky me Smile

Hope Santa took care of you all, and you all had a more relaxing day than I did!

A set of OKATSUNE Hedge Shears. Made in Japan using the same method that they make Samurai.

I can throw my old electric trimmer away. They are fantastic.

You have done well Zoe, it's nice to have more than one addiction.

Just had a look at them Gary, they look impressive, well done.

Doug, same thing here, I love my 2 stroke Victa's, but the same thing happened to my last one, rust, in the same spot, with the new base I have I never leave the catcher on, that area always receives attention with a product called 'penatreen' or a good spray of Lanolin oil.

What did I get, little things, but they mean so much. The best of, all the company of my lovely wife, Carole, which I dearly love.

Rain! 20 mls of it! Sitting on the back verandah with the kids watching the rain pour steadily down - best Christmas lunch ever.
I got other little stuff too, and some nice books to keep me happy - one on photographing birds, and another similar on flowers.

Doug

I used to have one of those early Victa's. Someone gave it to us when we built our first house.

My Dad taught me how to start them with an electric drill which was handy as the one I was given was just about had it and took about 50 goes with the rope to get it to fire.

The trick is simple enough and would be even more so with the new variable speed drills. You simply put one of those rotary sanding disks (with sandpaper for better traction) in the drill and hold it down on the bit you put the rope into and start it spinning. A few seconds of this and the old girl fired up every time.

David

I used the new clippers to trim nearly 80 or so metres of Murraya hedges (some had not been done for quite a while) and they are still sharp enough to cut a piece of paper. I actually received them last week but could not wait to try them.

I got them from New Zealand. Cost $150 delivered. Last year I purchased a pair of top of the line shears for the big B. They cost about $60 and were blunt and notched after about 10 metres.

Lee wanted me to get a pair of secateurs as well but I have a history of nearly cutting the tips off my fingers off with our old "blunt" ones so I refrained from buying something that surely would cut straight through bones as well as skin.

I hope you had plenty of the wet stuff yesterday oh and rain as well.

I got a diamond tiara, a case of Krug champagne and a fantastic 25m garden hose. Because I no longer have to lug bucket after bucket after bucket of water to the deck, I now can just sit out there in my bling and get drunk. Love that hose.

Betsy, I am unsure of your house watering arrangement, but I would definitely be looking at a set system to each part of the garden, it does make life easier. That way you will get to enjoy this,I got a diamond tiara, a case of Krug champagne

Okay, so the tiara came out of a Christmas cracker, and the Krug is actually Bridgewater Mill. Wanna make sumpthink of it?

Roseman, there are buried drip lines along the hedges, and the path plantings (baby ones). The rest of the place is so well established that we don't water anything ourselves - not a true garden. The deck is my facsimile inner-city courtyard, and no water delivery system would be easy to install discreetly. I didn't hate sloshing the buckets in between frequent rain - good resistance exercise!  - but that hose is a godsend for daily supply in dry times .

Hi Betsy, I don't know what your patio set-up is like, but I have the same problem with the beds in my sunroom - I have a very ugly irrigation system that is impossible to conceal. Or I have to make about 7 trips to the tap with my watering can.

Don't know if this would work for you (or even for me) but I have been thinking about making some sort of irrigation system out of copper piping thatwill sit above the beds, and making a sort of feature out of it, rather than trying to disguise it.

Ho-hum.

We had a great time..now for christmas I was very spolit.. I received two roses; blackberry nip and Charles Darwin, a book of gardens in China, a book on growing vertical gardens, a lovely necklace with a bee on it, a pen, some grout for my solar panel uprights and lotz of chocolates.. i have planted the roses but it is hot as hades here.. it is 29 C on the verandah right now at 9.30.. we think it got to about 37 today, which i know is not hot as it goes, but at 1000 m altitude, with the burning sun it is too hot Tantrum  how is everyone coping?

39.9 on the verandah in the shade ay our place. Luckily the Humidity was down to 68% (yesterday was 78%).

Made it a lot more comfortable.................. NOT

A relieving thunderstorm stopped about 30K short of our place.

Supposed to be a couple of degrees hotter tomorrow.
