Dr Huey x 12 to give away
Hello Rosebuds,
this summer it is a purge Dr Huey time from my garden. It is used as a rootstock and the plants that I have are what is left over after frost has killed the top. I have at least 12 plants to be pulled out. Someone might want them for grafting (please torture them).. Contact me if you would like them, I may be going to Sydney in January or members are welcome to drop by at our place to pick them up (en route between Brisbane and Sydney for example)..
here is a reminder of what it looks like..

Re: Dr Huey x 12 to give away
I dunno about that, I reckon we had someone on the forum looking for plants to play around with for grafting, they were writing about trying to strike them.. I could save them some trouble.. otherwise, for Dr Huey, and his gang of understock bandits, it is off with their heads..

The only answer to the question that Zoe placed earlier is the good Dr Phooey, SUCKERS badly. It is a good understock in the right conditions. If the rose to which it is attached is stressed it will overtake it. Also if you "happen" to mark it with a spade or similar it will sucker, where the other understocks more often than not will not sucker. These are my opinions from 20 years experience in this town. We only had one nursery here and all the roses came from one nursery in South Australia. Around the the streets of Mudgee you can see who bought roses from our local nursery in years gone by.

yes, the stressed factor is the issue here. By accident I planted some hebe around the bases of A shropshire lad, Lilian Austin, AB, and Betty Boop (it was a present OK!). The hebes insulated the base of the roses, no dieback from frost. Otherwise I am going to try a few mounds of horse poo on the bases of the roses, particularly the DA's

Caroline, you could go to this extreme to protect your roses from frost/stress

wow, it must be bad there if they have to do the protection on roses that grow up against the house. my issue is that i have 240+ rose over an acre of garden, so you end up missing some, risking others and coddling as many as possible. I have heard of the burlap technique of the northern hemisphere where they wrap the stems..and i think they would call that hessian in the photos burlap...can you imagine wrapping New Dawn or Conrad F. Meyer! thanks for the link

Since I have a I'm-Happy-Just-Here-Thank-You-Very-Much Dr Huey already I'm not in the market for one.
But if anyone has a spare virus-free multiflora needing a home....
(R.multiflora is the best one for acid soils.... right?)
