Hope You can Help

my name is Elaine iam new to your group.
We live in Townsville North QLD and iam hoping someone can give me the help i have been looking for and asking for weeks about.
Townsville is quite warm in an extended Summer getting too around an Average of 35 degress but with a High Humidity. We also do not get dark up here in the Warmer months until around 6.15 pm. Summer is the time we get our Wet season if it comes.

Winter here is Mild with day temps around 22 and getting down to Average of 9 degrees.
I am wanting to plant out a couple of good size beds with Roses. Two of these are in only about 3 to 4 hrs of Sun but up here i dont think that will matter. The other is Full all day Sun. The Bed in Full Sun i would like a Mix of different types but in the other two beds i love the Old English look of the Austins and most of the Florabundas. Also could anyone tell me is there such a thing as Shade Tolerent Rose?

EB57, there are a few roses that will grow well up there, probably the best are the Riethmuller Roses and some of the Tea Roses.
However I would suggest the Riethmullers as number one.
Forget the HT's and Floribunda's because they won't do well up there.
Nothing worse than sickly roses.

I have all the known surviving Riethmuller roses in Australia. I grow them because they are just so healthy for Northern Queensland.
Stay away from most of the latest nursery roses and join the Heritage Rose Soc of Queensland by phoning Barbara 0733567827 or Bonita Cattell who is a member of this forum 0746968449. Will be the best $35 you will ever spend.

Hello Elaine, welcome to 'rose addiction'!! Looks like you have the really good advice already, I would also agree with the recommendation to stay away from HT and modern Floribundas in general altho there are some that do cope really well with the heat and humidity. Hybrid Musk roses seem to thrive, Felicia gets a bit of BS but nothing that really slows her down, and Bloomfield Abundance and Pink Prosperity just go nuts! They flower pretty much year-round too, and both handle the shade here really well. The Hybrid Musk Penelope is another really healthy gorgeous rose for the warm areas too, and all of those roses seem to strike really well from cutting, very handy! I have several DA roses in, and they are constantly thriving and flowering; big sturdy plants with amazingly perfumed blooms. Aimee Vibert is supposed to be an excellent rose for shade, I don't know yet how she handles humidity, will let you know once I get my mitts on her! All the photos I have seen of her are just beautiful if you like sweet, dainty clusters of white blooms...
And you will have such fun discovering new treasures!!

By the way Elaine, just watch our for that all-day sun, up here your roses may be grateful for some protection from that afternoon blaze! I find planting a couple of deciduous trees helps protect in summer whilst allowing the winter sun through.. or A couple of attractive old-fashioned retro type beach umbrellas add interest and also protect the plants!!!!

Lildeb , that sounds great ,beach umbrellas , you'll have to post some pics , love looking at other peoples gardens ...

Hmmmm must drag the camera out.... but NOT til the new mower battery arrives!!!!! All you would see now would be bits and pieces popping their heads above the grass!!!
