Yes rosy I did fertilise with pellets

Re: Whats ailing my children
I found in the heat here in summer any pellets or manure just burns them and all the leaves go brown and fall off. That was what happened to mine last year. This year I have only used seasol and they are thriving. So on top of the heat and wind I believe that could be the problem. Even after removing some of the pellets on top of the soil they still lost their leaves it was too late Lots of watering didn't help either.

roseman wrote:Paul, can we have a shot of the young leaves near the terminal/apex/flower head.
1. What temps have you got
2. What wind speed/direction
Ta roseman here are some photos as you asked'
Here in Perth we have had mixed bag as far as the weather in concerned
one day hot, the next rain and cool, mild all sorts..
I must say the wind could be a factor..it seems to always blow a gail here on the coast, mainly w/sw and on the hot days e/se..
Hope the info helps...

In the garden I use sudden impact and in the pots I used strike back for orchids.. now for the amount...I must confess I was probably more liberal than what the labels say...also with the new roses I've potted, say, in the last 6 weeks I have mixed in some black magic to the potting mix. Also I do remember giving all the other roses some black magic, then probably 3 weeks later the got the pellets as mentioned above...Hmmm I think i might be beginning to see....
Re: Whats ailing my children
so you might well and blush , Mr paul....killing your roses with over kindness...naughty...naughty....seasol should have been the limit on those new bushes.......
PS: black magic is just plain old cheap npk wrapped up in a black shell and damn expensive for what it is

Thanks neptune...I think It will just be seasol for a month and see what happens...
Re: Whats ailing my children
You will probably find they will lose a lot of leaves and may not recover for some time. Maybe don't use any fertiliser for a while? And if you have any in small or black pots put them in part shade. The fertiliser in the pots will be burning the roots.

Good advice rosy...I do have 3-4 that are in smaller pots than the other..so I'll take your advice and move them..ta
Re: Whats ailing my children
No worries Just speaking from experience with the pellets and small pots. It's very disheartening when you try and feed them well and then the hot sun hits, I know I had no idea what to do at the time. Mine lost all their leaves and I thought they were going to die. I dug out as much of the pellets as I could and just kept watering them. They have come good now, took them about 8 weeks. Good luck

Re: Whats ailing my children
just a thought paul...those 3-4 in small pots....if they are ready to up-pot, then this is probably a good time to do it...that way you get rid of a lot of the infected soil and into new clean soil....

Thanks for your encouragement rosy...its like autumn a my place
Re: Whats ailing my children
Paul I would hit them with seasoil once every 2 weeks till they recover and then when they do hit them with Powerfeed.Like I said I did this to all my young roses in the gsrden bed and pots and has gave me great results you will be suprised.Liquid fertiliser in pots is the best, less harm of doing damage. This season I have did this to all my old roses to and works a treat.

Re: Whats ailing my children
Paul again IMO I would be flushing the roses, especially the potted one's with as much water as possible. Dilute the fertilizer. I would not feed for good couple of weeks so the fertilizer can leach out a bit/weaken it. Paul in the fourth shot where some bloke has grey shorts and bare feet, can he have a look at the bottom of the leaves in that shot with good eyes or a magnifying glass and look for 'mites', I have a suspicion you might have some.. If you have, could you photo them, just to show others.

Re: Whats ailing my children
when i feed my roses , always have done it late in the evening ,when its cool .. i never do it during the day .it helps to have the potting mix cool rather then sitting all day in the hot sun and pots do heat up quickly

Re: Whats ailing my children
Paul , if you do have spider mites , you can release predatory bugs that will eat them . You can order them through special orders at Bunnings , through Eco products , if you look at the Eco products you might find a leaflet on it , called Backyard Buddies natural pest control ...

Re: Whats ailing my children
Thanks everyone for all your advice..well I took a fair few leaf samples to my local Dawsons nurserey today..I thought that since I've recently bought a few rose from them, they could afford to have a look and give their opinion.
Well I must say that the advice given on the forum is somewhat the same as Dawsons...The man said in his opinion there could only be 2 reasons for my problems..1. over fertilising with heat adding to the problem..
2. Spider mites..
Now I showed him underneath some leaves and pointed out what I thought were traces of mites...he reconed it was mildew..he added that with the couple of hot days we've had, the hot sun kills the mildew which then causes a reaction with the leaves curling and browning off on the edges...which I must say does describe at some of the bushes I have been looking at.
Now I am still not convinced that I dont have mites..to me underneath the leaves is white looking with a shimmering look. So what do I look for I haven't seen any crawleys under the leaves...I have seen on top of the leaves and stems little round bugs that look like miniture ladybugs but are a beige colour...any ideas..

spider mites will leave behind very fine spider webs

Re: Whats ailing my children
Finally my roses are coming back nicely, after to much fertilising and the heat burnt and browned them off, as per my posts.
My question is... it has been 4 weeks now and the roses have had nothing but seasol. When would be a good time to start fertilsing again, and what would the members suggest...maybe something like seamungus.

Re: Whats ailing my children
leave the seamungus for winter time and give it a hit(of sudden impact) in February if you are going to give them a light prune to get your lovely autumn flush
