Baby Roses!
When I bent down to pull out these 'weeds' today, to my pleasant surprise I discovered that they are in fact baby roses! I have no idea where they came from or what rose/s they are. Just growing near some of the roses in the back yard. This may sound silly, but how does this happen? They are near where I pull out a couple of plants last month, surely the roots have not grown back? Are these from hips? I know nothing of baby roses ..........

Re: Baby Roses!
Both are very possible. I think? If so, then that's my big purple growing back (I think) and also there's two? Could two grow from one rootstock?

Re: Baby Roses!
By my eye you could have "rootstock" coming up as there are 2 bits of it. Trace it back from top of plant to where it joins and then follow it to the next bit, I am guessing by the look of it is the good Dr form of rootstock

Re: Baby Roses!
Thanks Roseman I thought it may have been a saying. I don't have that in my garden though? Does that mean whatever I pulled out was grafted? Excuse my questions, I have no ides on all this ..

Re: Baby Roses!
If that’s the old rootstock coming through, that means whatever you pulled out was grafted. I think it unlikely that any of the roses we buy are on their own roots, Teesh. Industry is grafting everything. Dr. Huey is a common rootstock, but it’s also a very beautiful vigorous climbing red rose that didn’t start its career as rootstock. It was made so, because it was healthy and grew well everywhere. Dr. Huey was a dentist and prominent rosarian who developed this rose. Whatever it is hang on to it.

Re: Baby Roses!
And if you don’t like it, you can graft another rose onto it …
I was given a “Dr. Huey” cutting by my neighbor, and really look forward to it. If mine is a Dr. Huey, the red is very deep and the petals velvety – no picture I took could show the texture.
I’m a bit curious now about what you’re going to get …

Re: Baby Roses!
They might come from the same plant, have you followed them down?
If so, detaching one carefully and potting it up might be an idea.
If they’re two individual plants, they’re more likely to be new seedlings.

Re: Baby Roses!
Usually they shoot up from the larger bits of root left in the ground from the previous rose. Quite often it is very hard to get enough root to keep them alive but try you may be lucky. Just dig a fair bit around the plant.
