Rose Identification Help Please!

No idea where I got her from .. And she has the most amazing buds when they are slightly open they're like a diamond shape.

Just moved this to the Modern Rose Identification forum.

How long have you had this one? Does it show any inclination to climb?

Have had it about 6 months I think.

I'm not 100% confident on what climbers are just yet. Still learning, but it could be?

It reminds me of Tournament of Roses.

Flowers are slightly smaller and not as many petals.

Don't put too much trust in features like petal count or bloom size, Tish. These are features that vary greatly with season and location. Typically, some roses that can normally be described as fully double are barely semi-double in warmer weather. Bloom size often depends on nutrition, age of the plant, other weather conditions, etc. This is why diagnostic shots of more stable features are more useful than flower shots.

On help me find and looking at some google photos, they are a different shape, colour, size, petal count and the leaves look different from what I can see too.

Help me find also says this has none to mild fragrance but mine has a nice fragrance. Medium to large roses and mine is small compared to most that I have. The picture looks deceiving. Maybe I should measure it? As you say maybe I need to grow them side by side to compare.

I see what you mean about size can be wrong, my first flush of flowers on most of my bushes were a lot smaller than what they are now.

I guess the key point I am trying to make is that roses, like any other living organism, are maleable in appearance and just because we plant a 'Mr Lincoln', for example, it doesn't mean its flowers will look like all the other 'Mr Lincoln's you will see. Factors such as climate, age, care, and even what kind of camera you use when photographing the rose can affect the colour, perception of size, shape, petal count. Add to this that some roses have been in commerce for such a long time that even they are beginning to show signs of changing/evolving as slight changes occur within their tissue. In fact these changes actually occur at an accelerated rate due to the way they are grown and commercially grown... it actually encourages mutations to occur. The 'Peace' we grow now, it has often been lamented, is a meer shadow of its former self in terms of intensity of colour and vigour. It could even be said that the 'Peace' we have now can no longer be called 'Peace' because it is a different rose by way of mass production in preference to the careful selection of budwood and indescrimate propagation.

So of all the features you have mentioned, none are typically geographically stable features and at best, unless the features are glaringly obvious (you can't mistake 'Euphrates' for anything) one must be cautious about identifying a rose in this manner. When I first saw your photos it immediately reminded me 'Madame Grégoire Staechelin' and this is why I asked if it climbed (which is itself an inconsistent feature that is often dependent on the knowledge and experience of the propgator). I refrained from mentioning it because I am basing my supposition on photos only as I've never grown MGS. It looks to have too many petals but I'm not aware of what variation occurs from plant to plant with regard to petal count for this variety. I've also had 'Just Joey' flowers look exactly like this in the past before it got shovelled.

This is why IDing roses is such a difficult thing and why to follow leads often means acquiring plants of known provenance and identification and growing them side-by-side

Sure is difficult I may not ever know the names of any of my 'unknowns'. Thanks for all the info, I'm learning so much on here.

Madame Grégoire Staechelin looks very like the weird shape that it has, but in the photos, as you say, not as many petals. It's not far off though .. BUT we do live in QLD so the intense heat I guess can alter the flowers somewhat?

I have 4 roses that need identifying, it's rather frustrating

But in the end, I guess they are still beautiful to look at no matter what their names

that right Tish still enjoy them even without the correct name, give them a pet name, they will yours and still be the same
