Campbelltown Rose?

Campbelltown Rose?
Hi, no picture here as I just bought a small rose without flowers at a charity market stall. The woman who had propagated it from her garden called it 'Campbelltown Rose' (as in Campbelltown, Sydney) and said it was also known as 'Cemetery Rose'. She said it was a pink Centifolia, fragrant, tallish growth but slender at base. Anyway, I can't find reference to either of these names on internet. I have read before about some varieties like 'Old Blush' often being found in old cemeteries but I haven't yet pinned down a 'Campbelltown' or 'Cemetery' rose. I have wondered if in fact it might be a misnomer and instead be 'Camperdown' rose originating around the Camperdown cemetery which is apparently well know for its heritage roses. Sorry for no flower picture but someone here might well have an idea of the rose I am talking about.
Thanks, Simon
Thanks, Simon

Re: Campbelltown Rose?
Unfortunately there is quite a few cemetaries in and around Sydney that are famous for their heritage roses... maybe you could ring somewhere like Rookwood cemetary or the Heritage Roses in Australia inc group (link in the links section) to see if there is one specifically known as the 'Campelltown Rose'.
Re: Campbelltown Rose?
It's a Damask and is in a few Sydney Gardens. I actually have it also and will try to find it here tomorrow. I have Lithgow Pink and 3 very nice found roses named as Charlies Pink, Dark Pink and Salmon. There are lot of these found roses.

Re: Campbelltown Rose?
It is a 'found' rose. It came from the cemetry on the corner of Broughton and Oxley Sts Campbelltown. One of our members(rosemeadow/Karen) has it growing. In her list she is calling it a bourbon, When she sees this Thread she might be able to give some more info on.

Re: Campbelltown Rose?
It's been discussed quite a bit in the Heritage Roses journal this year. Found everywhere, so it has lots of study names (including "Mrs Something"), and was probably an understock. There's no agreement as to its original name, or class (hybrid China has also been mentioned). It's sold as Charles Lawson but doesn't match the descriptions of that one, because it's lilac-pink and has very few prickles. Spring-only, suckers a bit, will scramble through other plants, lovely scent. Well worth growing, but I got it grafted (I've learnt the hard way about suckering roses in good garden conditions). In the HRIAI Collection at Renmark, it's labelled "Sturt Valley Rd".

I got mine from Mistydowns rose nursery. I will take some photoghraps of its blooms this Spring.
Thanks for telling us about it Margaret. I have it in my Bourbon row, but now I know its not certain that is what it is.
Yes Simon Tas, I wondered why you didn't know it !

Re: Campbelltown Rose?
Great to read the discussion. Sounds like the rose is a bit of a lovechild... Will start another thread with a pic of a rose I found in an abandoned garden...
