This may deter fungus infections
I have done a bit of reading regarding this matter, and what I have found is, plants deficient in Potassium ,are more likely to be affected by fungus diseases. Also potassium makes the function of the stomata ( little holes under the leaves which look like two cresent moons joined together) more efficient, therefore making them more drought resistant. The fertilizer that I use in the past had a higher than normal value of potassium. This year I went to a rural supply company got them to make up for me a NPK of 10-15-5 .

We give our plants a feed of potash every couple of years. I have read you should do it once every season.

Yep , my roses get a couple of doses of straight ag. potash each year , often it is the only "fertiliser" that they get .
Have done this for ever .... one of those *habits* be they good or bad that I learnt off my mum.
cheers. Rosalie

I have a stack of fallen tree branches and prunings etc to burn every year and use these ashes. Leave the pile burn until there is white ash left then bag or place on the gardens as soon as possible.
When I was a small boy all the ashes from the fuel stove were placed on the garden.

I have been told too and do whenever we have a fire big enough. Apparently you have to be pretty quick though as the potassium goes into the soil from the ash pretty quick.
