Bloody animals... My bloody alpaca worked out that if they get down on their knees and stick their head under the bottom strand of wire on the fence going around my seedlings and keep pushing they can get through... every one of my current year's seedlings have been ripped out or eaten to the ground... I've put ring lock around the whole thing now and have replanted things and have a sprinkler going on it that I'll leave on all night and will water seasol into it once the whole thing is soaking wet... not hopeful of saving much though... animals

I'm sorry to hear that. Animals! Remind me again why we have them. I have put chicken wire on my rose garden to stop my cat using it as a litter tray. They drive ya nuts...Let us know if you save any...good luck

People think I'm awful when I say I use electric fences to keep the kids and the stock where I want 'em , but it's true .
My kids treat all fences with respect , they don't go through the front one onto the Coalfields Highway and nor do they trespass into the neighbours places. The fence is not turned on all the time , but they don't know when it has been switched on.
The bolshy suffolks and the horses prefer now not to push their luck by testing it.

Yes my sister used a electice fence when she kept cows. Her cat made the mistake of wandering under it with his tail up. Amazing how fast cats can run.....

Not going to work with alpaca.... !! Been there, tried that!

I tell myself that this is why roses are so good - nearly ALL herbivores like to eat them!

My roses aren't near the fence (between sheep and alpaca and horses they wouldn't have a SNOWFLAKE'S HOPE IN HELL) but I do have to deal with BUNNIES.

I've had alpaca walk through electric fences. Even when they were shorn and dripping wet. And obviously getting zapped. (The power of an established habit on behaviour.)

As a general rule they are nice and easy with fencing but you get those exceptions who work out how things work... I've not had them go through 7-strand high tensile but they will go through the dam.

Re the bunnies - I am contemplating those carrots but I think I would need one of those Chemical Handler licence (after doing the course) things and since I don't use a lot of chemicals I haven't got around to that yet.

Do any of your neighbours have the chem licience

we've had a problem with rabbits too. We caught a couple in a cat trap but of course, the rabbits learn to avoid the trap. We discussed getting a Jack Russell Terrier but decided we didn't need another dog. Then lo and behold - my sweet little shelties that look like butter wouldn't melt in their mouths developed a taste for them - so far they've collected seven.

LOL My sheltie was pretty good at that too (PTS last year ) The mini-foxy works pretty hard but he has over 300 acres to find rabbits and mice in!! One of my Border Collies isn't too bad at catching them either. Just have too many rabbits though.

I've set the cat trap up and am seeing how it goes with "training" them at the moment. I figure every little bit helps!
