Post by Barbara B 14th May 2009, 19:17

Greeting friends,
nice to see some names that I know here.
My garden is in Somerville, Victoria, which is near Frankston.
I have 2 vegetable gardens - one for ordinary crops and the other for things like pumpkins and potatoes - things that can go a bit beserk.
I have 2 rose gardens - maybe 200 roses.
The rest of the garden is a mix of natives, deciduous trees and conifers.
We are presently replacing a lot of the natives as they are approaching twenty years old and are past their use-by dates.

Post by Barbara B 14th May 2009, 20:37

Hi roseman, thanks for the welcome. I don't want to say names because I'll miss people for sure and I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. Smile Hi Betty....(sister)
Climbers I have include Maria Callas, Iceberg, Peace, Queen Elizabeth, Ophelia, Blue moon, Crepuscule, Zepherine Drouhin, Crimson Glory, Angelface, Dublin Bay, Altissimo, Birthday Present and Lamarque.
I like the single roses and have few of them - White Wings, Dainty Bess, Squatter's Dream, Mary Guthrie,Rose Romantic, Mermaid, Lilac Charm,Jenny Brown, and Sally Holmes.
I have some David Austins of course, and modern hybrid teas but I like the old roses too.
Particular favourites are Golden Hostein, Blueberry Hill, Rosendorf Sparrieshoop and Greensleeves. I like their form. I love Elina and Charles de Gaulle. I would like Tipsy Imperial Concubine if only she'd open properly and not ball every time you breath on her.
Nice to join you.

Hi Abbi,
how do you like Tasmania?
I still treasure your daylily. They never stop flowering, do they?
What sort of garden are you planning?

Hi roseman,
we have the B in Barbara B because I'm on international dog lists and there are a lot of Barbaras in that world. The name stuck.
I met Abbi at Thee's years ago.

G'Day Barbara,

Hope you enjoy your stay. We've got a cutting/plant/grafting material exchange program going on here too. In the Rose Traders Database we list all the roses we have that we are happy to trade propagating material from. By listing them it shows that you are happy to be contacted by other forum members to exchange propagating material. I really need to update my list but if you look at mine, for instance, if you wanted propagating material of something like 'Leda' then you could just send me a message and I'd send you some material your way for you to experiment with. Cutting material has been only moderately successful so far, but grafting material and rooted cuttings has been very successful.

Which reminds me David... All the orange mini cuttings have struck and are growing on nicely. I think there was four or five of them all up. I'll grow them on a bit more and send you one or two back when the weather starts warming up again. I'm on holidays in 2 weeks so will be sending your little rooted cuttings and seeds up your way then.

Cheers,

Simon

Our cuttings failed for 2 reasons I think, we only had the dregs of the cuttings and the we had only just started with the propagation bench, at that time it was trial and error, the orange mini was one of many errors.

Hi,
you can call me Barb or Barbara, I don't care. Smile
The database of roses for swapping is a nice idea. It's a good time of year right now - I have a few in that I want repeats of. I'll have a look at what's available.
Roseman, I have the same breed of dog as my sister Betty. We both have Shetland Sheepdogs - a sort of miniature collie, but prettier. I love you

So pleased your daylily was good, Barbara. I brought several with me........not sure how well they'll go coz they had to have their roots and foliage cut off and be scrubbed to within an inch of their little lives to come thru Tassie quarantine. If I get lots of different colours maybe i can send you more.

The iris that i treated the same way are going well.

I'm starting several rose gardens here. Fingers crossed.
