Morning everyone, I thought I would throw this one in here. PaulH and I have been throwing emails back and forth about plant nutrition, Whilst looking at this subject for and with Paul I thought it would be a good place to have conversation about it, so here is a small link to nutrition,

Thanks for the link David, I must say it isinteresting reading, for me it will take a bit of time to re read and re read with a couple of cups of lemon and ginger tea

Things I think I've sussed out, the plant gets most of its nitrogen from the atmosphere, so the introduction of more nitrogen from another source needs to be monitored closely. For sandy soils, especially here in Perth, close attention should payed to the lack of sulphur in the soil along with copper. I guess this may be the reason some rose growers like to have there soils on the acidic. As I understand it the lack of sulphur can show up in ways that one would not first look at sulphur deficiencies. Also copper is one that is always lacking in our depleted sandy soils.
In my garden and pots the ph are all at levels of 6.5 to 7.0, now because roses like soils on the acid side, I would say sulphur is lacking. I see the are two types of suplhur, fast acting (sulphate) and slow acting (elemental), so where to go from here, hmmm l need some more thoughts on that.

Anyways, thats just some quick thoughts, from some of the reading, now if I'm of base, please someone tell me.

I would try the government sites looking for soil type maps and then 'google' soil tests or sample analysis of them. I guess this is another little experiment/job boxing day, not much happens Christmas Day(HoHoHoHo)

I spoke to an old rose grower a little while ago and what he said was more or less confirmed by the article.

He said that he fed his roses potash once a year and he had no trouble with BS or Mildew.

Ok David, more homework lol .... for me I must admit I find this subject challenging, so if I ask some dumb questions please have a little patience.

Paul, this might cost you a few bucks, but you could take three soil samples from different areas of your garden and send them off to a chem lab for analysis...... this will say you a lot of time and guess work......

Thanks John, I believe there is a considerable cost to this, do you have any idea what it would be worth?

I will be doing one soon , but will be sending it to SA......my worm juice man put me onto these people as their analysis is far better than what he can get here

Interesting John,

John, when you send the sample off is there any questions with it. The reason I ask, some testing labs will ask "what" are you growing. I find this a bit lopsided as "sometimes" the answer comes back leaning a bit ambiguous, I guess I am saying "it comes back more like a general result". Also do they do tissue samples, that would be interesting. Have you the name of the company John, I would like to see if they have some sort of web site.

Now Paul, here is another one for reading, not for the purpose of deficiency, but I believe Magnesium and Manganese are an intrinsic part of the food relationship with Potassium.

Gary, yes as I have read this article a couple of times and other articles about plants I believe good healthy strong leaf growth suppresses disease. It is a thing we strive for in our vineyard.

Dave(Merry Xmas).....I don't know the name of the lab yet....was going to get that when I am ready for testing......actually I just might go in the New Year and get the name.......hmmmmm

I wonder if we 'googled' labs in SA if they might come up.
