Tautology
Tautology is a phrase or expression in which the same thing is said twice in different words. This is considered a grammatical error. Recently I was researching sports in roses and was reading an article written by a well known American rose author and I noticed she wrote " reverted back". This is an example of tautology. Sports can revert to the original not revert back to the original. For those who wondering I haven't joined the ranks of the grammatical police as I would be the last to criticise the grammar of others. At times some of the things I write in the wee hours of the morning then read them the next day wow! Thank God for the editing feature of the forum.

Re: Tautology
Here's one I hear at work a bit: "he died of a fatal overdose", or "she was killed when she was fatally stabbed by her husband" etc etc. in both cases, the word 'fatal' is redundant because these people wouldn't have died/been killed f the situations weren't fatal, and we've already been told the outcome at the start of the sentence.
Sorry, I just realised these examples are a bit morbid! But you get the idea..

Re: Tautology
Not quite "tautology" but on the radio, they something along these lines "a person was stabbed to death and we are treating it as suspicious".

Re: Tautology
A classic that came to mind this afternoon relates to when I was playing golf at Wallacia Golf Club back in the seventies when a mate made the comment, "that Japanese man from Japan is playing off the wrong tee."

Yep David, the media say some stupid stuff sometimes! We find it a constant source of entertainment.

Re: Tautology
How about "a person of interest is helping us with our investigation"
