Pruning Question

This video will teach you how to bud. What I suggest is you take cuttings from your prunings take a bud and graft it back onto your cutting. Do this numerous times as practice before you try budding onto rootstock.

I have a rose in a pot that I bought bare rooted in a Treloar Sale a couple of years back and it only has one cane and hasn't moved. When I get a chance I'll try your method David however I beginning to think there is some thing sinister going on underground.

I would check the root system Doug, then look around the bud union.

A good result! Sorry no email. The bud union has definitely been an area that I have not focused on enough when maintaining my roses but I certainly will now. While this discussion has been on going I have gone around a number of my roses and given them the rub treatment. David I didn't post a photo of the single cane rose that got clobbered.

I will resend Brett. I had thought you posted a single cane photo with a crack along it's length and tied with tape, I guess it was someone else, no problem.

This the rose that got clobbered and ended up with just one cane. The cane that was left was badly split and I took a chance and cut it back. I took your advice and gave the rose bud union a rub and a dose of seasol. This happened 10 days ago. Unfortunately I don't have any early photos but here are some photos taken this afternoon. Just maybe this rose will rise again??

Sorry for the number of posts but for some reason I couldn't get more than one photo per post even after resizing.

By the way the name of the rose is Best Friend! I bought it due to my love for my four legged mates so the rose means a lot to me.

This is another rose that is in worse shape. Using what David has shown me and I have read I will try to improve this rose as well. May be a tough go but nothing ventured nothing gained. This before and gentle clean and rub.

Brett, did you know that for some strange reason that is beyond me, when you tie straps/wire/electrical ties around canes, the canes die. Just throwing that one out there........

If Purple Tiger is a catholic rose you had better send for a priest. The rose in the first lot of photos should survive because of the two buds having poked through. To help with the development of these buds I would give it a liberal watering of a Seasol/Thrive solution.

Scale is one offender, that will not help the plant, it needs a spray, not sure what you have. I also do not like tags as John has already said, it happens to me at times as well.
In all the photo's it appears that half the cane is dead all the way down one side, is this right ? if so IMO I would cot the one stem back 25mm/1" at a time to find living wood, this might take you back to the bud union or just above.
As you have cleaned up the bud union, it is time to feed it and IMO a liquid feed as Doug mentions, I also would keep the "moisture" in the pot, up to it, not wet, but damp. Is the soil old or newish and does it drain ok ?. I know you are "not" supposed to over feed rose/plants, but I would feed it more often for a few weeks, but, reduce the amount of fertilizer per application

Lucky I have a priest living across the road. Yes have been giving both roses a good drink of seasol and the rain has helped.

Will do David, I am hoping to see a little activity around the bud union and will progressively prune the cane back. The soil is new as I repotted it and it drains well.
