Louise Odier

Hi, not many people on here grow OGR(old garden roses), so the question goes out to those that do, does anyone grow "Louise Odier". When we were in England last year we purchased it for our extended family. The fragrance was one of the main criteria for the purchase as my brother in law is colour blind to a point, but has a fantastic nose for smell. I have two coming from Thomas' I hope. Tried it a couple of years ago but it did not grow very well at all. I don't think it liked our climate

I have it David , the fragrance is amazing , had mine for almost 4 years , no disease in sight , and a good performer

Thanks Dan, I seem to remember you having it, I was hoping you would chime in about it. Dan when was the second shot taken/time of year. That is the colour it, "lavender/purplish" produces in England rather than the pinker shade.
Dan what about it's growth over 4 years that you have had it, I assume it is in a pot. What about the position, full sun /part shade ?. I would like to get the planting right first time around.

I seem to recall this particular shot was taken  in November , well to be honest I haven't done any pruning on it   , just basically removing the thin  stems and some light dead wood so right now it is about 1.5 x1  .. and yes it is in a large pot , David I would recommend to grow it somewhere to protect it from the afternoon sun as the blooms can get burnt in a hot sun . and she is a heavy feeder , but you will be happy with it I hope .. I know it does very well in my climate so good luck ..

I have just tuned in. I have grown Louise Odier for 12 ms and so far, so good. Her flowers are gorgeous and highly perfumed. Did not repeat well after the gorgeous Spring display, probably due to the drought over summer. I'm hoping this year she will perform better this year as I will have more time, as well as higher rain fall this year so far compared to last year.

Thanks for the info rosebud, I am awaiting delivery of it times two from Thomas'. Is yours in the ground or pot. I guess you have pruned and if so it definitely time to feed it for the first Spring flush. It takes a while for the food to travel the entire plant system, just my opinion

Louise Odier is in the ground - and awaiting a light prune. I only lightly prune my Bourbon's as some resent heavy pruning (from memory according to Heather Rumsey in their catalogue which I saved from years ago). I discovered Bourbon's dislike of this too late after heavily pruning a lovely sprawling bush of Mme Isaac Perierre - it has struggled and 2 years on is only a shadow of its former glory. Have given Louise Odier a good dressing of pot-ash and will top up with a generous supply of fresh cow manure and then mulch well. Current heavy rain is watering all this in well!

Thanks for that rosebud, I believe the older roses should be left partially unkept as they were designed for.
Please send aforementioned water down our way please for my new roses.

Dan, there are lots of buds on plants here at the moment, not only roses, I do not think they know it is still Winter. I spoke Glynis at Thomas' on Thursday about my order to see if she had another Louise Odier, so that's two coming.
I guess you have fed her Dan and the rest of your roses ?

I haven't fed her David, well not since feb., I start feeding my roses after the first flush in spring . guess its warmer in the pots and you right lots of things here are flowering and they shouldn't be . same at the nursery at work.

Dan, unless I am wrong should plants not be fed prior to the first of the the Spring growth ?

I've always fed them after the first flush David,everyone is different I guess .
