Anybody grown the RSL Rose?
Has anybody grown the RSL rose? I have seen it in the Treloar catalogue and rather like it. Any thoughts please.

Re: Anybody grown the RSL Rose?
I haven't seen the rose but it is for a good cause so why not take a punt.

Good thinking Doug! It really is a beauty. Just wondered about it's health and size. Think it is a fairly new rose.

It's on my order from Treloars. Looking forward to seeing how it goes.

Re: Anybody grown the RSL Rose?
The RSL Rose is another rose that has come from overseas and renamed for a cause. The RSL Rose was released by Meilland International in 2010 as "Garden Director Bartje Miller"

Re: Anybody grown the RSL Rose?
I have it growing in a pot in a very sunny courtyard and I find it to be a beaut little rose. The shrub is very generous with the flowers and disease free but as Jordan writes, it doesn't have much of a perfume. It will be interesting to see how it goes with the frost this winter although I have mulched it quite heavily

Hariet does it still snow in Armidale or has global warming changed the climate since my student days back in the sixties.

Re: Anybody grown the RSL Rose?
the last, really big snow fall was in 1989 and apparently another good one in 1984 .. we get the odd snow falls most years and even though we are at 1020m altitude it doesn't really settle.. see [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
in 2007 it snowed in November and I remember looking out of my office and the saguaro cactus were flowering with snow fluttering around them ... we could handle more snow but the downside as you have heard me whinge many times is the frosts and in particular the 'false' springs..

Re: Anybody grown the RSL Rose?
Sue I have an RSL growing in a large pot, for about 2 years now. I found it to be a bit of a slow starter, only hitting its straps this year. Blooms, while very nice, do not last long on the plant, blink and you'll miss them, they really do fall over quickly, however I've found they will last a little longer in a vase, but nowhere like others do. Rsl is not a rose I would go out and but again.
Re: Anybody grown the RSL Rose?
Yes Paul. It's disappointing when you have to wait for a couple of years to see the "real" bush! I've had that problem with my Bridget's Rose. Just this Autumn, it has produced 3 beautiful blooms! The RSL rose looks so lovely. I'm disappointed it has no scent though. Certainly looks as though it should! I know it is from the Meilland "stable" and I think one of its parents was Black Magic. May look at that to grow instead. Ausrose will hopefully put me right!! LOL

Thank you David. It's a lovely rose, but.... I still love the colouring of RSL. Maybe I'll look at both! Have you grown Black Magic?

I'd be interested in how you go with black beauty David, if you remember from one of my previous posts on a couple of plants that were going disgustingly, BB was a real problem child, I feel that it was an inferior graft, I picked it up from a boutique rose nursery here in Perth. Well I dug it out some weeks ago and replaced with another BB, in the same spot using neptunes box method, all seems ok. Interestingly, I removed 3 roses that day pruned them right back and removed all of the disgusting foliage and potted them, 2 of them took off quickly leafed up great, however the BB is now just starting to shoot in a couple of places, its been about 4 weeks, Hmmm. I took not that when I removed BB the was a distinct lack of a root ball etc, compared yo the other 2 I dug up the roots were hardly there, hence the inferior graft idea
