Good small fragrant climber please
I've been searching everywhere for a fragrant smallish climber , not a house eater , to go over a small arbour , any colour , fragrant. I've got Nahema , so not that one and not Pierre de Ronstaad , no fragrance . I'm thinking Madame Issac Pierre , but its prone to mildew and i can't be bothered spraying , or Reine de Violette , have read that it needs lots of attention . A yellow or red would be good too . Any one got any good suggestions , thanks ......

Re: Good small fragrant climber please
If you like red, Maree, how about Altissimo. Vicious thorns but not too vigorous and the most amazing large single flower. Ooops - no fragrance, sorry! Would one of the noisettes suit you? Lots of flowers and perfume and not too vigorous.

Blush Noisette or Narrow Water will probably suit your needs. Lots of flowers with plenty of perfume

Balinbear , just reading about Blush Noisette and someone said it is cold tender , we have extremes of temps here , can get down to 0 degrees , and 45 in summer although that is usually rare , what do you think , thanks ...

Re: Good small fragrant climber please
Celine Forestier is one of the loveliest noisettes, maree. Mannerly climber/pillar rose, fragrant, yellow, yummy.

Re: Good small fragrant climber please
Celine is gorgeous! My only problem with her is that she goes onward and upward on the small arbour where she grows for me, so her flowers are way out of reach. I'd like to try growing her against a fence where I can tie the canes a bit more horizontally. She is one rose who has not stopped flowering through all this hot weather, and is just beautiful.

Re: Good small fragrant climber please
Would Gloire de Dijon, sometimes classified as a Tea, suit your needs? Unusually coloured flowers (dare I say latte?) and not too vigorous with nice perfume. Has taken a while to establish herself here (probably due to water rations - ie, no rain!) but is now taking off.
Then there's my favourite tough lady, Madame Alfred Carriere, noisette, that is almost thornless, so easier to cut back. She also tolerates some shade.
I have always coveted Lady Hillingdon (Clg) with apricot coloured and perfumed flowers. Can reach 7 m over time according to Judith McLeod's description but I think she would be easily controlled.
Maybe a pillar rose would be suitable? The Hybrid Perpetual, Gloire de Ducher, grows to almost 2 m as a pillar rose, with glorious perfume and a gorgeous purple/crimson. Delicious, very tough but very thorny.

Re: Good small fragrant climber please
There's a little climbing tea called Adam that interests me, don't know if it would suit your needs but it looks particularly lovely and the apricot flowers would look great with Nahema I think.

Re: Good small fragrant climber please
What a great list of suggestions, eh? Me, I think climbers are the way of the future, and not the much-touted but (IMO) dinky little minfloras. In tight spaces and small gardens, vertical space remains a fabulous frontier.

Re: Good small fragrant climber please
In addition to the clg teas, noisettes and HP's there's always David Austin's Graham Thomas - great as a pillar rose with scrumptious yellow smelly flowers!

Re: Good small fragrant climber please
Thanks everyone , Betsy you are probably right on climbing roses are the future of roses , there seems to be more and more hybrid teas being cloned into climbing roses . Rosebud i had thought of Graham Thomas , my arbour is about 1 metre wide by 4 metres length , probably wouldn't fit , will look at all the other suggestions too , thanks ..

Adam tends to resent pruning.

Re: Good small fragrant climber please
Maree, I can tell you from growing five different noisettes in the Seattle area that noisies by and large can tough it out in Melbourne, no problem. I wish I still had my old pix of Mme Al Carriere, Celine Forestier and Rev d'Or covered in snow as proof ;-))))).
Noisettes can't withstand the long deep-freeze winters, say, of Montana and Idaho or Europe's alpine areas, but Melbourne - easy as.

Re: Good small fragrant climber please
maree, Celine is no Mme Al or Reve d'Or. With those two, like Crepuscule (so I hear), you stick 'em in teh ground and stand back, Not so Celine. Takes her time, and you may lose patience with her. BUT, let me say that she's that strange noisette who eats like a pig. Her planting hole needs as much prep and goodies as an HT. Food speeds her along a bit. She also needs wind protection, and hates intense heat so I'm told (but Bebbie above says it work=s for her in intense heat, so there ya go)
The thing that set CF apart for me was her scent. Someone said that it "hangs in the air". Indeed, and so makes up for most of her demanding -ness.
? Reve D'Or is so damn fine, it's best all-round yellow climbing rose I've ever seen , in any class. Over time she will stretch out and up, but she's also so rewarding, so fast...I had her on an arbor about teh size you mention, and she was perfectly mannerly for teh four years i had her in Seattle.

Re: Good small fragrant climber please
Sorry for all typos, especially DEBBIE. It's just that I get so excited by noisettes. Never mind roses, the noisies (that I know)are among my favourite plants/

Re: Good small fragrant climber please
I knew who you meant, Betsy.I am rather smitten with Celine. When I first saw her, I just couldn't believe how beautiful she was. And she keeps on flowering almost without a break. Mine is actually in a very sheltered position, with no sun in the afternoon. I think she is probably a bit too shaded and that may be why she just goes up and up. And, yes, the perfume is lovely!

Hmmm... delicous. I think I will just have to add the gorgeous Celine to my 'must have' list after reading all these reviews. Now where will I put up a new trellis for her to show off on?

Re: Good small fragrant climber please
Rosebud , i'm torn between two roses , i've narrowed it down to Celine or Crown Princess Margarita ( DA ) , Celine probably slow to establish , ( do i have the patience ) Margarita , smaller probably quicker to establish , richer orangey /yellow colour , just going by what i have read , also i'd like to plant a clematis with them . Hummnnn , just don't know ....
