Personally I would say no as I don't know what the chemical reaction between the two would be.....do you know a chemist....remember each has its own job singular , otherwise they would make one together like weed and feed.....

Smart thinking there Neptune, how long should the interval be when using each product, it's a bummer when you need to use both at the same time. lol

I would use triforine first, but its going to rain in the next two days , then I would wait till you have a couple of days of dry weather, but the fungicide I would use early 2morrow morning before the rain sets in later on...that way it will have a couple of dry hours to work.....(early - 6am).......

I was told today about a product by Searles that does both fungicide and insects in the one bottle that's supposed to be good, I haven't tried it yet. Rose pro and also Trifend, both do the same thing apparently.

Paul, the way to check to see if chemicals can be mixed is type the name/active ingredient into 'Mr google' it should take you to a site from the manufacturer or one called "pestgenie"(which is no longer free in some instances). It will ask you do you want to view the "label/MSDS". Read the label one and it will say around the last bit "this chemical is compatible with". Some "trade names" might not come up in this type of search. Have a go and let me know how you go ?

Thanks Roseman, very interesting. i have been recommended a product called Resolva. Have bought some and sprayed it in the hope it will work!! Seems to be doing so at the moment. It is an "All in One Bug and Fungus Killer" with TMX plant guard - what ever that means! Mr Bunnings sells it. $10 ish for 750mls in a spray bottle. It is also for ornamentals. Fingers Crossed

Sue, can you tell us 'who' makes it, also what does it say about the "TMX" on the label, please

Not Sue here, but I can tell you that Resolva is owned by Syngenta, the world's largest agrochemicals company which is based in Switzerland (Zurich, I believe)

TMX is Thiamethoxam, a broad spectrum systemic insecticide. According to Syngenta, thiamethoxam 'improves the level and activity of specific functional proteins. These proteins interact with various stress defence mechanisms of the plant, allowing it to better cope under tough growing conditions, such as: drought, low pH, high soil salinity, free radicals from UV radiation, heat stress leading to protein degradation, toxic levels of aluminium, wounding from pests, wind, hail and virus attack.'

But in recent news (August) the European Commission has suspended the use of thiamethoxam on bee attractive crops.

Syngenta has submitted a legal challenge to the decision, asserting that the ruling was made based on flawed information. The company further claims to be deeply committed to bee health. (I am puzzled  as to how an insecticide giant can promote itself as bee friendly. Sort of like  Japanese whalers claiming that their activities are in aid of scientific whale research). The bee crisis continues.

Paul and Martino , that is a good organic combination if you want to spray , i used it for many years , but now would rather introduce beneficial insects to control pests .....

Apologies for not replying before and thanks betsyw, couldn't have put it better myself! LOL I too wouldn't trust the multi nationals, but this stuff hasn't deterred the bees from visiting the 2 bushes I sprayed. I usually use eco rose and oil too, but they had no effect, so had to resort to the spray. BUT - Save the Whales I say!! LOL

Problem is, Sue, that the bees AREN'T deterred. If only they were. The bees come in contact with TMX through guttation - the exudation from roses on their leaves. Has a devastating effect on the bee, of course.

What the EU is claiming is a direct connection between TMX and other neonicotinoids with bee colony collapse. There is not universal agreement on this, of course, and the powers that be of agribusiness are stridently protesting that there isn't enough evidence.

Here is some general encapsulated info from wiki. You be the judge. And yes, you are so right! Save the Whales! But we really need those bees for our own survival.

From what i have read with Eco-Rose and Eco Oil you have to use it right from the start after you prune in winter and every two weeks or so after that ,best if you add some seaweed in there too ,but i just couldn't be bothered with all that and it is expensive too ....

Post by Ausrose 23rd October 2013, 20:40

I have always combined fungicides and insecticides and it has been effective without any negative side effects. The combinations I use are similar to those used by the the chemical companies in their insecticide/fungicide sprays. These days like many other rosarians I am becoming more and more concerned about the use of chemicals however as an exhibitor one has little choice if one is to be competitive.
