YES!! Black Caviar I am so excited for. Augusta Luise IS AMAZING! Give it a good year or so to establish but loves full sun and after all this rain mine is almost as tall as me and very bushy! It has to be one of my favourites.

Re: My 2013 Purchases
Can someone tell me whether Black Caviar is an Australian bred rose? With an iconic name such as Black Caviar one would be led to believe it is. With respect to roses named after after champion racehorses I do recall a rose being called Eye Liner after a champion 2yr old filly that raced in Queensland during the early 1960s. The rose was bred by Queensland hybridist Fred Armbrust who also bred the red rose Tania Verstak. Bred in 1962 the rose Tania Verstak is still available in catalogues today.

Re: My 2013 Purchases
Nope, not an Australian rose. It is one from Knight's stable of clients - Guillot, Harkness, Cocker, etc. I'm speculating that it's a Guillot Generosa, but everyone else can dismiss that as wild rumour-mongering.
What's with the sudden interest in the hithertofore unheard of (almost)Tania? Ozeboy has one, too.

Re: My 2013 Purchases
Betsy, I think I can answer your about Tania, Doug(Ausrose) is for Oz bred roses and that is what he is referring to I think.
Doug as for the name of a rose like "Black Caviar" it is pure marketing. As was "Tania Verstak" back in 61, but not to the extremes of today, I guess you could call it getting on the "bandwagon".
In the terms of "marketing" I think it is now called "value adding" to product.

Re: My 2013 Purchases
With respect to the Tania Verstak rose my interest is a personal one as in 1961 I was in my final year as a student at high school and the crowning of Tania Verstak as the first migrant Australian was well publicised and obviously made an impression on me. I first came across the rose in the Adelaide Botanical Gardens in 2008 and later found it listed in Thomas for Roses catalogue. Last week I gave a talk on Australian bred roses to the Gold Coast Rose Society and the I mentioned the rose when I spoke of Queenslander Fred Armbrust and the 16 roses he bred.

I wish. However I must have a thing about beauty queens as my wife is a former Miss South Africa.
