Re: The List
"As soon as it went in the ground the leaves went all skinny like it was deficient in something but had the same treatment as all the others I have which are thriving."
It is a good chance the rose suffered from glyphosate poisoning. The clue being the skinny leaves.

Re: The List
Would you mind showing me the tag? I remember the tag it had but not the name on it.

Re: The List
Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup and it spells death for roses even if if is only spray drift that gets on a rose.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Note the skinny leaves - this rose is suffering of glyphosate poisoning.

Re: The List
Rosy I'll try to take a photo of the tag tomorrow.
Ausrose, just regarding Roundup. Last year I had to remove a large and very vigorous Banksia Rose. I could only cut it down at ground level, so we used undiluted concentrated Roundup to finish it off. It has received 4 treatments so far and keeps sending up the healthiest looking canes. One tough rose for sure but now I'm wondering whether Roundup is as deadly to roses as I've been led to believe.

Re: The List
DO NOT SPRAY the rose, cut a branch/stem off and paint it straight away. We use this method in the vineyard to great success, but it has to be done as soon as the cut is made. The R/up needs to be neat no water and the strongest strength you have of it.

Re: The List
That's exactly what I have done,Roseman. I use a small paint brush on the new canes using concentrate Roundup neat. I'm very careful not to contaminate anything else. Just when I think the stump is dead, it sends up another healthy looking strong cane!

Re: The List
I have used roundup a few times around the roses, even at the base of some roses.. And this was the only one affected. I know it is bad to use poison. I am really against even spraying my roses with poison but some weeds are just too persistent. Do you think some roses are just more succeptible to this? Also when I planted Ebb Tide it was when we had just moved in and not used poison. Unless there was some in the soil from the previous owner?

Re: The List
Discretion is the better part of valour and I think anyone who uses Roundup in the vicinity of roses is playing Russian roulette. It is claimed Roundup isn't residual however I have been told by a very experienced rosarian that when it is mixed with a wetting agent it can accumulate in the ground and cause problems.

Re: The List
I haven't had any problems with any of my roses with roundup, I use it when there is no wind etc. I do not use it often because I don't believe in poison, but sometimes I just have no choice. At the point where Ebb Tide was in the ground there had not been any roundup used. Perhaps it had already been poisoned at the nursery I am not sure.

Re: The List
A certain times of year we use it by the gallon and have never had any pro.blems even when it gets onto the rose foliage. I don't go out of my way to spray the roses but sometimes you cant help it.
Maybe it ony affects certain roses.
