Swanes for Home Run.

Thank you Finbarr, I have just purchased 'Home Run' in a 200mm pot from Dural.
It's one of the cleanest healthiest looking rose I have ever seen.

Must be an early Christmas present at $12.95 each.

I have a smile from ear to ear looking like the cat that just ate the canary.

This should be one hell of a breeding rose with Baby Love and Knock out in it's pedigree.

It does pay to patronise Swanes for they bring in some great roses which would not be possible for an individual.

Now there's a coincidence. I was only looking at Home Run on the Kordes site yesterday. Sounds like an excellent Kordes innovation, if not exactly what I need. Also checking out the new Kordes"Parfuma" breeding program for health+perfume.

I see now, checking again, that it's a Tom Carruth rose. Still, it's on the Kordes site - for sale, I guess. I take the Kordes offering to be an endorsement of Home Run

What might you cross it with Bruce

David, there are just so many options for this rose. I have seedlings of Chew Fragbabe X Roundelay and Chew Fragbabe X Montezuma all looking like the real deal when it comes to health. All other seedlings did get mildew very bad but these not a mark. Bonica, Carefree Beauty, Carefree Wonder and Gemini could also be a good option. I dont mind Baby Love on both sides of the parents and not sure how much inbreeding it would take for them to break down. I'm going to find out. The above seedlings I feel will also be worth a try.

I just want healthy roses that will stand up to the Sydney climate.

Good on you Ozeboy , someone has to give us roses , that are trouble free but fragrant and beautiful too ....

Maree, I'm trying but a lot of more experienced breeders than I are still trying to get all the goodies on one rose.

Home Run is the first "rose" that i can confidently say is spray free, we have a number of trial patches around sydney that haven't been touched by fungicide for over 2 years and yet have suffered no spot or mildew. and that through 2010 - 2012 when we were well into La Nina conditions. i'm hopeful our own evaluations match those that are willing to give it a go.

Finbarr ,can i ask please , what is your honest evaluation of Soul Mate , is it a healthy , fragrant , good cutting rose ? Thanks

healthy, yes, fragrant, yes but not intense, cutting, well it depends on what you compare it to but any shortfall is made up by being fast repeat. remember we are looking at garden roses, and the average gardener, and the producer, is impressed by quick repeat. too many petals get in the way of that.
