What is this monster?

Yesterday I was watering in some sheep manure at the base of an eight year old climbing Mr Lincoln when I noticed this 'thingy'at the base of the graft. I dug around it and found it went down amongst the roots. So I got my husband to chop it away with a tomahawk. It was about the size of a large grapefruit which looked like a huge wart. When I looked closely, I saw two 'worms' sort of grey with a cream stripe on the back - about 2mm long. Any suggestions? I am thinking either a crown gall or nematodes. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. It is infectious and will I need to remove Mr Lincoln so other roses don't catch something. I first noticed it about four months ago when it was smaller and I thought it was just a huge graft stump.

I am having trouble hosting an image for some unknown reason. This is what I did. I went to Upload an image. I found the picture file which is a jpg. Clicked Host it. New page with three options appeared. I clicked copy on the middle one. No success.
Please help me.

It's probably your browser Bonita.
Highlight the middle link in that list of three and then do a CRTL +C to copy it. In the message body then CRTL +V to paste.
For some reason that "copy function" on the hosting box doesn't work with my browser either....

I have that problem too Bonita and AutumnDamask , usually have to go to a different host , very confusing !!!

On another subject
For those of you who know Lilia Weatherley the rose breeder from Hobart, you will be sad to hear she died today.

For what it is worth IMO, it is 'gaul' it can de removed by cutting it off. If it was me I would dunk the whole root system in a fungicide solution.

Yesterday a lab scientist rosy friend suggested I use Rogor when I told her about it.
Since I cut it off with the tomahawk and watered it the rose has not appeared to wilt or in any way be affected by the surgery.

Alot of galls are caused by bacteria not fungus, there pretty hard to controll.

My doctor is a jockey-sized welshman so he had better watch out. I chose him because he is considerably younger than me! I won't offer to assist him in any surgery he intends to do.

So no-one is voting for nematodes? That is what I thought was most likely because it had little worms with stripes down their backs.

Bonita nematodes are more common in sandy soils. They are so small they need to be magnified to see them.

Our soil is red volcanic and in the drought it was very water resistant. I think the local description for it is "snuffy soil" which is a good name because it gets up your nose! It has a high surface tension or it did before I started working on it over the past ten years. Today I have been spreading lots of sheep manure and watering it in deeply with a water fork. I don't need a magnifying glass to see my worms.

I'm with Warren, "Crown Gall", which is infectious. It can infect other plants near by and suggest removing all the soil the infected plant was growing in before planting another rose.

Thanks for that advice. I will attend to it when the weather cools a little more. We mountain dwellers don't like it much hotter than about 15 degrees. At least the humidity here is a lot lower than in coastal Qld.
