Piggy Possums- HELP! Empty Piggy Possums- HELP!

Post by lildeb 25th August 2012, 10:12

Now let me say, I don't mind sharing, and both Lil'Poss and Fat-Poss were here before us but REALLY!!
I am working on Cathy (Ladybird roses) suggestion, growing a couple of monster roses with easy access ropes, and growing my treasures with less easy access... but in the meantime..
It has all the elements of a good Abbott and Costello (including the l'il one and the fat one) or a Looneytunes cartoon! Add in a hundred bandicoots all with tiny shovels and ready for 'trick-or-treat'; the stout-hearted, courageous and slightly goofy duo Cap'n Pudge the Cocker and Yuki 'Snow-boy' Maremma and all we need is the band! (Music thoughtfully provided by Mouse the chi/italian greyhound)
The cats "Like, dude, we are totally outa here! Like, this is SO uncool-what, you seriously e'spec ME to mess wi'that??"

So tell me good folks, have I wasted my time planting garlic and chives everywhere (should I have added buttered bread and tiny napkins) or will it take stakes thru the heart and silver bullets?!

Piggy Possums- HELP! Empty Re: Piggy Possums- HELP!

Post by Guest 25th August 2012, 13:36

I did when I lived in Malvern, they used to visit the Chinese Pistachio tree outside my bedroom window every spring when the growth was young and tender from 1am. All you would hear was that khee khee khee noise all night, and then go out chasing them with a stick hoping for peace and quiet. Cute little things but in the bush.

For peace and quiet and getting the sanity back, the cross and garlic might work followed by the silver bullet

HAHA! Well we live on 40 acres and with our chooks, ducks and dairy goats peace and quiet are rare at the best of times!
We like to think we are good and tolerant neighbours, even when we found LilPoss on the kitchen bench with half a pumpkin clasped to her chest, eyes shut in ecstasy! (I am sure she intended to express undying gratitude but with her mouth so full...)
If sharing is caring, it is all a one-way street (gravel road) and leads straight through the young (not above poss-reach) roses.. They are now encased in unattractive but inedible birdwire, with spring onion and baby garlic chive bedmates! (Silver bullets being even more expensive than roses) hmmm maybe crash guards next, against the enthusiastic "Cops n Robbers" pursuits. Perhaps the FBI, CIA and ASIO could mount a joint training mission here but the pay would be peanuts.. we are all out of pumpkin..

I saw some funny looking rags hanging all over a friend’s place: fence, BBQ, gutters, etc. everywhere, and asked about them. Possum deterrent, they reckoned.
Don’t know, if it actually works, thankfully never had a problem like that.
Oh no, roses encased in birdwire, oh no … my heart goes out to you.

I have seen or heard somewhere of a product called "Poss-off" but, like that vibe-emitting snake repeller, I have yet to find anyone who has tried it. Yep,birdwire, just so not the look I was aiming for! Grow fast little roses! (And more garlic- not quite the fragrance one expects in a garden!)
MAYBE I will start a new fashion- stake and crucifix deco with a hint of garlic! Dance

Hi,
I've used Poss-Off and it works but it's only temporary. You could make up your own mix with Worcestershire sauce and chilli, I reckon. I've heard that you could put a teddy or other stuffed toy out and it scares them away for a while.

Hm- maybe if I hang teddy from a noose and stuff his mouth with garlic cloves.. Fat Poss is not easily scared.. Might give your recipe a try til I can get my paws on some Poss-off! Thanks Barbara, temporary is all I ask! (Then I rotate to the next temporary til the unkillable monsters (I HOPE- Cherokee rose BTW) are really huge and tasty-looking!

Hi,
you can always buy a possum trap and trap them. Only problem is that by law you must release them within 50 metres of where they were caught.

May the dear soul who thought that law up be "blessed" with an abundance of large ravenous brushtails to fill his (sleepless) nights, and empty his garden!

I think it wouldn't make any difference if we took them far far away- except for the racket when they finally hiked back home and discovered their beds had been taken over by new tenants!!

I also relocate snakes, I keep a shovel handy so there is no delay, and I hear Heaven is nice any time of year!
Innocent

wonder if Possum stew recipe is similar to a recipe I read about for Galah Soup; did it require large rocks and a long cooking time??
