It's a type of moth caterpillar, David. Which one I'm not sure... probably something like a Painted Apple Moth (Teia species). Will need a better photo to be sure.

Mum calls them hairy grubs tongue and they can cause a skin reaction like stinging nettles do, if you touch them.
