Awesome Sight
thought I would post a couple of photos of what we woke up to this morning, a scary but awesome sight. Photos taken from our backyard. The fire is about 12kms from us and is heading our way, we are about 800 metres from the ocean so we are pretty safe. A couple of our children and their families are in the fires path and have been put on a watch status, which basically means they should leave or be prepared to defend their houses. A lot of drama, however I'm sure they will all be ok, gauging the winds etc, I'm sure the sea breeze is coming in now which will send the fires away from where they live.

Re: Awesome Sight
I see it was moving at 900mts per hour on the flats.... fire has never been a good sight for anyone except in a barbecue.....

my son just rang and told me that our suburb in on alert now as well, apparently the wind has changed direction again and we could come under flying embers, we are in a pretty built up area with very little bush land. The embers are a problem for people who have roof top air conditioners, so the advice is to turn them off.
Re: Awesome Sight
I hope all are safe over your way Paul, you are right, embers are something we do not think of or see till they ignite something.

Re: Awesome Sight
All Clear this morning, was a relief, just woke up to a lot of burnt embers about 1 inch long. It was good to go out side without the heaviness of smoke everywhere.

That is always a good feeling, Paul.....

Re: Awesome Sight
I hate it how when there's a fire near your place they always tell you to turn the aircon off! It's cruel! Heh.
Glad you're well

They usually do this to avoid filling the house with smoke.... or worse, drawing the burning embers into the house....

I know Wendy. It's just that it seems like a double slap in the face - "hey, it's so hot that your house might actually burn down, but no AC for you!".
It's just like on really hot days, if you're driving an old car and it starts overheating, you have to put the heater on. Ha. Just awful.

Re: Awesome Sight
It was on again for the last couple of days, this time the fire took off heading north and not heading west. A lot of smoke around, the orange glow at nighttime was awesome to see.

Re: Awesome Sight
Full on. Is that from the Yanchep fire or the Baldivis fire?
My sister used to live in Roleystone, up in the hills. She got sick of the house nearly burning down every year, so last year she sold and moved to BALDIVIS! The fire gods are just following her around I think.

The fire was traveling towards Yanchep, it got close, more southwards. Ahh! your sister can't take a trick, still I think she would be in a safer place.

I read somewhere the other day that 75% of Australian Homes have aircon. A bit of a surprise. We have never had it despite the heat and humidity. Windows, fan and swimming pool does enough though a trip to the movies or the shopping centres seems to be popular of late.
