rosebud wrote:Sure, Balinbear, ..."As Paul says in his book, heritage roses do not need the attention and do not suffer as much as modern roses do" ...

but it would be good to have a book that talks about heritage roses in a sub-tropical climate as a reference, along the lines of the Tea Roses book (Chapman et al) that focuses on growing in a warm climate.

I was probably really just having a poke at non heritage rose growers when I made that comment but in reality I think growing anything is a challenge and sometimes what you grow well is completely different to what someone down the road manages gets to grow well. Really up our way the challenge seems to be to get people (nurseries especially) to understand that you can grow roses up here and that the Teas, Chinas etc are generally best suited unless you want to spend your life with a spray pack on your back.

The book does list the things that affect roses in subtropical climates and any problems that you might encounter with heritage roses will be in Paul's book. Add that information to that in the Tea Ladies book and you have a wealth of information. Possibly the main one needed to be considered is the size that some of them will grow in the warmer weather when compared to the size listed in the books. I can remember Susan Irvine commenting that someone in France had drunk too may bottles of wine when they said that they had a Marie Van Houtte that was 70 feet in circumference (diameter 6.79 metres). Our original MVH was that large and more and about 3 metres high. The poor thing is now only a shadow of its former self after it was flattened by a thunderstorm and has never really recovered yet one of her cuttings is getting to that size.

There was a little paperback book put out up here by Leonie Kearney and Barb Wicks about growing heritage roses in South East Queensland. We have a copy around here some where as it surfaces every now and again but it is a bit out dated with regard to the rose lists etc. If I can find it I will let you know the details and you may be able to find a copy.

Agree with all you've said Balinbear (and I'd heard of the local publication) - but my New Year's Resolution still stands!! Wink

Paul's book is for mainstream rose enthusiasts.

1. Quit smoking.
2. Don't go broke (maybe we should compare notes on this one Autumn? Haha. Although I think my resolution #1 should help with this!)
3. Spend more time in the garden.

4. Get some chooks!!! Husband says no. I pretended not to hear.

It would be great if you could give up smoking  as it definitely catches up with you healthwise. I gave up some thirty odd years ago and it wasn't easy. If I hadn't by now I would have been looking at roses ifrom a completely different perspective than I do now. Good luck.

I agree Doug, from a non smoker it must be hard to give up Zoe, but if you could make any of the four resolutions come to fruition lets make it your number 1

Thanks you guys Smile

I'm going to hit it with the triple whammy - read the book, get the nicotine gum, and get hypnotised! Hopefully that will do the trick! Heh.

this will only work if YOU want it to happen above all else...no half measures.....once you stop the tar will be out of your system in less than six weeks......most people find that the first week is easy...the second week a bit harder ...the third week the hardest.......pass the third week and you are cruising..... good luck in your quest and welcome to the fresh air world..... It took me two attempts to give up smoking before I was able too. The first time I went 11 months without a smoke then one day I had a smoke to relieve boredom while waiting for my tee time at Richmond Golf Club that had been put back an hour. Once I had one it was as though I'd never given up. About 5 years later I gave up again with sheer will power and that was thirty years ago.

Well, I'm still smoking, I've gone part-time at work so I'm well on my way to being broke, and my garden is full of weeds. BUT I do have five little chooks now, and it's only February, so I feel like I'm winning Smile

Gee Zoe..... it's soooo hard! Don't be "hard" on yourself. Try again when you really want to. As John said, you've really got to want to, not to please anyone else.
